11. Memory
It pained Hound to see Mirage like this. He recognized nothing, looking at everything with innocent optics and not even comprehending his situation. It was like his Mirage was killed and replaced by this blank slate.
He carried himself like Mirage, talked like him, even acted like him to an extent. But this wasn’t the Mirage he knew, he didn’t talk about Cybertron, couldn’t even remember it, didn’t complain about how dirty Earth was, didn’t tell Hound his hopes and fears and no longer looked at him with love and affection.
Next battle, Hound was going to thrash Soundwave.
12. Insanity
“Hound, you idiot. What possessed you to-to- Why did you cover me like that? You stupid mech,” Mirage lectured, vocalizer catching and producing a burst of static. He kept stroking the gray faceplate with his hand, cupping Hound’s cheek.
“Wasn’t gonna let you get hurt,” Hound croaked, still sore and tired after getting himself shot. “I’d go insane if I lost ya, ‘Raj.”
Mirage leaned down, kissing Hound. “Idiot,” he whispered affectionately. If only Hound could understand that his death would affect Mirage no differently.
13. Misfortune
“I swear, the universe hates me,” Mirage pouted on a med berth, waiting for Ratchet to build him a new leg.
“Lucky for you, I love you more than the universe hates you.” Hound settled beside the spy on the berth, pulling him close as he pulled out a data pad. “Although, if the universe hated you, wouldn’t you have died by now?”
Mirage scoffed. “Of course not, it wants me to suffer.”
“Well if it hated you that much, we’d never have met,” Hound replied, gently drawing the spy into a tender kiss.
“Can’t be unlucky all the time.”
14. Smile
“So then the mech says ‘But I thought that was your gun turret!’”
Mirage shook his head, chuckling lightly with a smile on his lips. “That is horrible, Hound.”
“Still made ya laugh,” Hound returned with his own grin. It struck Hound that this was the first real smile he’d seen on Mirage. Granted, they’d only known each other for a few hecto-cycles, but that was still a long time to not see someone smile.
“You should smile more often. Looks really cute on you.”
He grinned at the flush of purple from heated energon on Mirage’s thin cheek plates.
15. Silence
“Where are they?” The interrogator growled, fingers tightening around the base of his electric baton.
Mirage smiled through his pain and energon spattered lips. “Nowhere you will ever find.” His smile quickly fell as he was hit with the baton again, agonizing heat and electric fire racing down his side. But at least he didn't screamed.
“I can do this all day, Autobot.”
“And I can take it all day. You’re wasting your time.”
“We’ll see.”
Thinking about Hound, hidden alongside their friends, was more than enough to keep Mirage silent.
16. Questioning
“Why did you approach me?” Mirage asked, lying with Hound on their berth.
“Huh? Approach you?”
“That day we met. Why did you talk to me?”
“You looked lonely. I’d heard what happened to the Towers, thought you could’ve used a friendly face.”
“You truly are the sweetest mech, Hound,” Mirage said with affection.
“How long ya been wondering about that anyway?”
“Pretty much since that day and you asked if you could sit with me.”
“Well, who wouldn’t want to sit with such a pretty faceplate?”
17. Blood
“C’mon Hound, we have to keep moving,” Mirage said, encouraging his mate as he helped Hound limp on. The scout had damaged his leg pretty bad and could only walk with Mirage’s assistance. With each step they left a longer trail of spilled energon in their wake as it dripped down Hound’s damaged leg.
“You should go on without me, I’m only slowing you down. The Decepticons are sure to track and capture us both if you don’t leave.”
“You wouldn’t leave me, don’t even think I’d be willing to leave you.”
“Stubborn idiot.”
“I love you too, Hound.”
18. Rainbow
Mirage had to admit, some of Earth’s sights were truly marvelous. The rain and water in general fascinated him the most. He’d never seen so much of it and the planet was covered in it, humans even made a hobby of swimming in it. He’d never known of rain that wouldn’t peel the paint right off of you.
It was after the rain that presented the planet’s most beautiful sight however. A spectrum of colors all streaking across the sky as sun and rain combined.
“Beautiful isn’t it?” Hound asked, hugging Mirage from behind. “Almost as lovely as you.”
19. Gray
No, no, NO! He didn’t realize he was screaming as he ran towards the familiar body on the ground, now gray with death.
“Mirage! Nonono, Mirage! Please Mirage wake up!” He was shaking Mirage back and forth. It was a prank, the twins had painted Mirage gray while he wasn’t looking and Mirage had been knocked out in the battle.
He was being pulled away, Mirage was getting further away from him.
“C’mon Hound, there’s nothing you can do for him now,” Trailbreaker murmured gently.
“NO! He’s just knocked out! Let me go, ‘Breaker! MIRAGE!”
20. Fortitude
The abrupt end of the soft hum of his cell’s energy bars had Mirage wearily looking up. He smiled in relief at the familiar faces walking into his cell. Hound was in front of him first, kneeling and meeting his optics with unmasked relief
“Didn’t tell them a thing.”
Hound smiled, gently kissing Mirage. “I know.” He shifted aside for the medic to assess Mirage. After he gave the okay, Hound hefted Mirage up, cradling the spy. Mirage didn’t have the energy to protest.
“Knew you were too fraggin’ stubborn for them.”
---
Memory is a plot bunny that I've had for a while, involving Mirage being captured and tortured by the Decepticons. They eventually release him without his memories courtesy of Soundwave, all to torment the Autobots. And even after the Autobots get him back, they struggle with whether to restore Mirage's memories, because the first thing he starts to remember is the torture and any other terrible memory he has. I figured Megatron was an evil enough bastard to do something like that, and that he might think this would torment Optimus more than to just kill Mirage, since Optimus takes everything done to his soldiers personally.
And as to Gray, I read on TFWiki that in the 80's movie there was a story board where Mirage was shot by Megatron, and it was speculated that he might have been killed due to the movie's high body count. So I ran with that much to Hound and Mirage's dissatisfaction.
