Since I first got contact lenses I've dreaded this day, having witnessed rahael's painful experiences with the affliction. Last night, after going for an evening walk, I noticed that the astigmatism in my right eye was more prominent than usual. A couple of hours later, the vision in that eye developed a milky cast; when I went to the bathroom to remove ( Read more... )

I am currently wearing my glasses. Last night my eye was bloodshot and oozing. I still think it is desert fatigue. My new contacts came and I tossed my old ones. After a night without contacts, my eyes have been fine.

I have never had a problem with eye infections until we went to Italy. My eyes have been red and oozy a couple of times, since, most recently as I recall (prior to yesterday) in Tripoli

On the other hand, the Kinston NC newspaper. Can't you find a better link?

Well, I could have used ABC News, but I didn't think it was alarmist enough.

After about twenty-four hours, I'm either reassuringly down to pink or frighteningly still pink.

On the other hand, it's great news for someone moving to Tennessee. Since I did pick up the current infection in Tennessee, maybe I should worry.

Bah. The difference between iris bleaching and tinted contact lenses is the difference between a sun-kissed natural tan and some artificial self-bronzer, between a good haircut and a toupee, between lightning and the lightning bug. Plus, there are safety issues as well; after all, contact lenses have been linked to eye infections.

May I just say that this whole post has made me extremely glad I had to stop wearing contact lenses? Ewww.
I quit wearing my lenses when my arms got too short for me to focus on the itty bitty labels on stuff...bifocal contact lenses just seemed too out there for me.

My eye has, at certain times, a gold ring around the pupil
I've got that too and I'm certain the power of light has nothing to do with it

Hmm. Your anecdotes counter my anecdotes. I suppose I could be mistaken. Eye color, like skin color, is determined by the light-sensitive pigment melanin, but I can't find anything online connecting sun exposure to the appearance of gold in the iris.

As I recall, your eyes are a lighter blue than mine, so they might contain more gold, enough that you wouldn't notice small, light-reactive changes over the course of the year. I might have a more liminal amount, so that small changes would be more dramatic.

Or I could be full of it. That's always a safe option.

Mmmm. When I was a kid I had bluer eyes than now and I used to have much more exposure to the sun (which I really don't now). I only got the golden-brown circle much later, so either there's a long time before the eye produces this melanin after exposure, either as a teen I had much more exposure to the sun than I thought, either it's not linked.
(note that I had other changes in features at puberty which definitly have nothing to do with the sun, like curly hair instead of straight, so I think this can be tied to hormonal changes and whatever, at least as co-factors)

My eyes are pretty light but not so blue (mostly green-grey, may varies with light) I don't really remember how they compare to yours #^_^#
