Ron was still holding a grudge against Crooks over the whole Scabbers incident and didn't care much for Hermione's scruffy, grouchy familiar. So Crooks, being half-kneazle, saved Snape's life by pulling a Lassie so that he (Severus) could get together with his mistress.

Crookshanks, being a feline and half-Kneazle to boot, refused to go chasing after Boy-With-Crooked-Scar and Goofy-Ginger-Head. He knew that his familiar would, as usual, adequately organize the expedition and make sure the males did not die or otherwise get into too much trouble. Instead, after eating his fill at the Large Celebration at the Burrow, he Flooed to Hogwarts and proceeded to organize Mrs. Norris, Trevor, and the others as the Familiars Battalion in preparation for Snake Face's expected bombardment of the school. Even the Greasy Git's familiar joined up, though Crookshanks could never be sure if his was the foul-mouthed jarvey, the black cat, the garden snake, or the raven. It seemed to change depending on the preferences of the featured fanfic author. In any case, he knew that if the Git's familiar was involved, Snake Face wouldn't have a chance. After the Suits of Armor brigade had done its worst, Crookshanks, helped by Tabby-Cat-With-Glasses led the Familiars Battalion into victory against several Masked Men.
