Ron was still holding a grudge against Crooks over the whole Scabbers incident and didn't care much for Hermione's scruffy, grouchy familiar. So Crooks, being half-kneazle, saved Snape's life by pulling a Lassie so that he (Severus) could get together with his mistress.

You know, I really like this. It might not have taken you much time, but I think it's perfect as a drabble. As others have noted, it would be an adorable starting point for a longer fic.
I like the way Crookshanks' little cat-mind works. I especially like his realization that Snape is too skinny, and his resoning that Snape's feeder must be lying down on the job.
Kneazles are pretty smart like that. :D
