Author's Notes: Draco must choose which mission to carry out, whatever the consequences.

Draco let out a strangled cry as he watched her fall, disappearing behind a headstone as the endless night swallowed her up, flashes of light illuminating her surprised face. His heart stopped for what seemed an eternity, the world around him moving in slow motion. His mind was made.

Turning to the tall man beside him he licked his dry lips and reached up with a trembling hand, removing the mask which held him imprisoned. Lucius glanced over over as he threw up a Shield Charm, blocking them from a deadly curse.

“What are you doing?” he snarled. “Put that back on!”

“I’m sorry, father,” Draco choked. Dropping the mask at his sire’s feet he fled into the fray, dodging spells and wizards, not seeing any of it, his eyes only for her. His stomach dropped sickeningly as he dove behind the headstone, his father’s betrayed screech renting the air.

The stone above them shattered and Draco threw himself over Ginny as she cried out. He pushed her harder against the stone, deeper into shadow.

“Draco?” she croaked. The whole left side of her face was a mass blood and he had to swallow hard before he could answer her.

“Don’t talk,” he bade her, covering her once more from his father’s fury. “Hold on to me, I’m getting you out of here!”

“Your mission-”

“It doesn’t matter now, Protego!” Wrapping his arms around her trembling form he looked up just in time to see Potter’s stunned gaze stare hauntingly at them, then turn, hardened, to the silver haired man charging them down.

“RUN!” Potter screamed before taking Lucius on. Without a second thought, Draco Apparated on the spot, the last thing his father had taught him, and stole his beloved from the war.

Title: Listen and Understand
Words: 300
Rating: K
Warnings: None
Author's Notes: Heavily based on The Terminator, including a few of the quotes from the original movie.

He reaches his hand out to her, looking tired and worn, as though he’s been running for years. When he speaks his words make her trust him.

“Come with me if you want to live.”

Five minutes with him showed her that the world she knew had dissolved under Voldemort’s rule. Chaos had taken hold in Wizarding Britain.

And he’d sent his Death Eaters after her.

She wasn’t used to running. The Gryffindor in her wouldn’t allow it. But he’d pulled her on anyway.

They’d only just escaped from Bellatrix when he’d snapped at her.

“Listen! And understand! The Death Eater’s are out there. They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.”

His words had shaken her, sent the reality of their situation ringing through her.

They could never stop running.

She was so confused.

“Malfoy. Why me? Why's he want me?”

Draco looked down, studying his hands.

“My father showed me a picture of you once. I didn't know why at the time. It looked very old - torn, faded. You seemed just a little sad. I always wondered what you were thinking at that moment. I memorized every line, every curve. I turned against the Dark Lord for you Ginny. You were always my hope for salvation. I love you; I always have.”

And when they’d been trapped by Bellatrix, slowly circling them like a cat circling a mouse, he’d given his life for her, given her the chance she needed to take out the deranged witch and run.

And when her son asks about his father years later, she knows exactly what she’ll say.

They’d only had a few hours, but they’d loved a lifetime’s worth.

-x-

It's quiet. Ginny tried to muster a smile as she looked up to her husband across the dinner table. 'Do you like the mince pie? Mum taught me.'

'It's fine,' Draco responded. Ginny tried to keep smiling as she nodded and looked down. This was ridiculous. Five years of marriage, and already they had absolutely nothing to say to each other. Ginny couldn't even remember the last time Draco'd touched her. 'I've got to get back to work,' Draco said, suddenly.

'Right,' Ginny said, and watched him leave. Draco worked at Gringotts. Something to do with Arithmancy. Ginny had never asked because she'd honestly never been interested. When she was sure Draco had left, she let out a groan, sinking back into her seat. Just then, the oven beeped and Ginny heaved a sigh. 'What?' she demanded, as she entered the kitchen.

'No need to be tetchy,' Kingsley said, leaning against the counter-top. He pointed at the brown Ministry file on the table. 'You know what to do.'

'Lovely,' Ginny responded to the sharp crack of Disapparation. She'd kept up appearances; to everyone, she was a Trainee Healer at St Mungo's. But really, she wasn't. She killed people for a living. The Ministry had enemies they couldn't afford to publicly take out, so she did it for them. It paid well.

She opened the file.

'That prick,' she whispered, in disbelief. In the folder was a very apt description of the person she was supposed to take out.

A second later, she had a wand at her throat. Her own was pointed right between Draco's eyes. 'Good reflexes,' Draco whispered low in her ear.

'Fuck,' Ginny responded, quietly.

'Maybe later,' Draco said, and fired the first spell.

Author's notes: A different take on the prompt. I hope everyone likes!

It was amazing how off movie battles really were.

In a movie - Gladiator, for example-there would be elegant, sweeping shots of the battlefield. The clash of swords and the whistle of spears would sound against the sweeping score by Hans Zimmer. On screen, battles were seen as a work of art, and death as poetry.

Draco knew that that was far from the truth.

He'd seen death up close before, had come perilously close to dying himself. Battles weren't beautiful; they were unrefined and ugly, with a sense of hysteria that mounted as the curses flew. Draco had been neither the hero nor the true villain, but that didn't matter. He was a survivor.

The films never showed the aftermath, either. Everyone assumed that, after the battle was won and the hero had kissed the leading lady, they all lived happily ever after.

In reality, the nightmares never stopped. There were times when Draco would awaken in the middle of the night, gasping for breath as the faces of his victims - Madame Rosmerta, Katie Bell, Ron Weasley, to name a few-paraded in front of his eyes.

The look on Professor Burbage's face when the Dark Lord had cast the killing blow.

How her eyes pleaded with Professor Snape for mercy.

Even though he wasn't the hero, Draco had his own leading lady to hold him tight, to kiss away the pain. Ginny knew what it was like to face the dead in her dreams, to feel phantom pains from scars-and in his case, a tattoo.

She was just as haunted as he.

Draco didn't deserve a happily ever after, and maybe that wasn't how his story was destined to end. But he had Ginny, and that was enough.

His story was still being written, after all.
