This morning I finished watching Robert Altman's '3 Women.' What a completely bizarre movie -- strangest thing I've seen in ages!

i loved that movie so much. i am not sure about parts of the plot, but just the overall aesthetics, and those two actresses, and the locations were just amazing & made me really uh...want to watch more films from the 70s with cute freckly awkward girls.

I watched this movie at your recommendation, as a matter of fact! I was so intrigued by your description that I had to check it out for myself. I found it a little disturbing, almost like a horror movie in a way, but much more subtle. Still, it's a beautiful movie and I liked it a lot.

Robert Altman + Sissy Spacek sounds very promising to me. And if it's as oddball as you are saying, then it looks like something that I need to see!!!

I will check it out!

It was just released on DVD by Criterion. It's got the original trailers and TV spots, plus running commentary by Robert Altman.

This was filmed a couple years after 'Carrie,' and there's one part where Pinky Rose spills barbecue sauce all over the front of her dress. A weird nod to Carrie?

I checked it out from the public library!

I think I've heard of 'Die Mommy Die' -- I need to look for it! I'm crazy about Natasha Lyonne, too.

There are a lot of ugly food references in this movie that I really enjoyed. Like, Millie goes on and on about these opulent dinner parties she's always throwing, but when it comes time for her dinner party? Most tragic thing ever. She serves wine (two kinds, Tickled Pink and Lemon Satin), crackers with Easy Cheese, pigs in a blanket (with barbecue sauce in goblets), and chocolate pudding from a can ("It's already cooked"). She takes so much effort putting everything together, and she's so proud of it, and then... all her friends stand her up. It's the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen.

I thought Shelley Duvall was just heartbreaking as Millie. I saw this film eons ago when I was a teenager and even then, much to my utter dismay, fascination, horror and, oddly enough, acceptance I completely related to Millie. I always thought that La Duvall deserved at the very least a Best Actress Oscar nod for this performance.

Maybe there's a little bit of Millie in everyone. I'm going to cling to that belief, because I was also dismayed by how much I could relate. (Maybe if I watch it again I'll be a little more accepting. It's a movie that touches those weird, unspoken fears, and maybe it'd take another viewing to really absorb the messages.)

What's even more amazing about Duvall's performance is that she improvised a lot of the script! The rambles about food and decorating? And all the diary entries? She wrote or improvised all that herself!

There's one part where Millie tries to contact Pinky's parents, and I like that she calls information for Quitman, Texas -- Spacek's real-life hometown!
