even though i havent bought a U2 album in ages, i still love the old stuff (one of my first real 'obsessions' in music), and i'll always admire bono for what he's been able to accomplish. they stood for stuff before they were 'big' and they took the power of being 'big' and used it to accomplish so much more. i think it's an incredible way to give back, and a way to not squander your blessings (of fame and success), to be able and willing to contribute so much. plus, i remember when bono said once, years ago, something about how there's no way to escape being affected by money and fame, you cant deny, but you dont have to lose yourself in it.
