I really enjoyed this story. Your development and exploration of Charley and John's relationship, and your characterization of Sarah and Derek through Charley's eyes, have the sense of distance we'd expect from someone like Charley who's more of an outsider with respect to the Connors' crazy lives, but also a warmly real sense of how he might have been drawn back in despite himself. Derek rubbed his knuckles across his chin, contemplating my unspoken request, then stuck out his hand.

Stunned at his show of friendship, I hesitated a moment before reciprocating, extending my own hand slowly. "Thank you," I said gratefully, possibly the first truth I'd spoken since entering Sarah's home.

"Sarah doesn't need to know you stopped by." Just before opening the door, with his hand resting on the doorknob, Derek stretched his lips over his teeth in what I believed was a smile. "Don't take this the wrong way, but it's really safer for all concerned if you just went on with your life and didn't look back."
Aww. I love your use of detail here: Derek rubbing his knuckles across his chin, Derek baring his teeth in a Derek-smile-half in almost-friendship, half in warning-at Charley.Different hope than what Sarah offered and a different future than what Derek and the robot were showing him.

In conclusion... this is the type of second chance I'd want for them-some kind of peace and reconciliation and even hope, before other events overtook them. I don't know if you've watched last night's episode yet (if you haven't, I don't think it's a spoiler to say Charley's in it, since the previews from last week showed he would be), but this is what I'd want them to have had.
