Volkswagen adverts -- high risk, for sure!

In the past several days, I've seen a couple of unusual TV ads for a new generation of Volkswagen. They start by referring -- quite frankly -- to the huge scandal of the company "fudging" their pollution-control standards. A weird way to sell me a car ( Read more... )

I haven't seen the ads for the new VW electric van yet, but if Volkswagen doesn't fuck this up they could have a hit on their hands. The original VW microbus was popular with the "freedom generation," those who were individual, who tended to follow their own tune, the hippies of the 60s and early 70s, so an all electric "give the planet a chance" microbus focused on those who want to leave a small footprint could very well be a game changer.

Reminds me once upon a time, driving on I-10 we ran across a procession of old (but some beautifully rebuilt) V-dub vans -- evidently heading back from camping in the desert.

Well if they just brush aside the controversy it would have been a bit of a PR backlash, so I guess embrace it to show their electrics is the best way of covering their bases?
