Dear Rio -- ooh, high praise from authentic Brits-- yes, indeed. (But what do you sweeties know about the west of Yorkshire?)

Seriously, I'm looking forward to the EIGHT episodes -- woohoo! (It almost sounds like a 19th-century "L-Word".)

And did you know it is based on Anne's 3-million-word diaries? And that the diaries are in code?? (All this from the review...)

Dear Rio -- thanks for the further feedback -- the code business is fascinating. (Talk about being "in the closet"...)

The nearest I've been to Yorkshire is Newcastle -- and, last year, when our cruiseship docked there, I headed straight to a local and ordered a brown ale. I got it, but the publican told me it was no longer brewed in Newcastle -- but in West Yorkshire! Somehow doesn't taste the same...

Kisses, J

I'm almost always impressed by the work HBO does when they produce a series for television, and this one sounds quite interesting.

Thanks, Rio (and the Ponies) and Jasper -- for your kind reactions to this post.

I finally got some time to watch that HBO thing, "Gentleman Jack"...

It was sooooo freaking GOOD! The West Yorkshire county (formerly named the West Ridings -- courtesy of Rio!) settings were amazing, and the already-large cast was marvelous.

But Anne, the hawk-nosed central character, is the major focus. She strides powerfully wherever she goes, says precisely what she thinks, and suddenly gets a good reason to stay a while in her home territory -- a comely woman.

In short, Anne is a thoroughgoing 1830s lesbian, her toughness known all over the county... and her vulnerability shown only to her married lez bedmate, whom she can have only when she takes off from home/hubby occasionally.

Oh, and the end-titles feature a bawdy song -- which actually seem to be from the period --about a disreputable lesbian named "Gentleman Jack"...

OMG, seven more episodes to go! Catch it on Tuesday!

The loves of "Gentleman Jack" devifemme April 29 2019, 11:04:57 UTC
https://www.annelister.co.uk/annes-lovers/

I googled Anne Lister, chancing to find "her" Website (above) and a well-compiled list of FIVE of her lovers.

Now some folks may NOT want to visit that lovely site -- because it definitely contains "spoilers" concerning the plot of the 8-episode series. (Notably about the lives of Ann Walker, Anne Lister's wife, and her old boarding-school chum, Mariana, her lifelong love. Both women are wonderfully introduced in the first episode.)
