I got an email from LJ about some sort of security breach they're trying to take care of right now. So maybe that is partially responsible for the glitches?
Thanks so much, Melissa! Could be the problem -- and this Ubuntu thing seems to be working fine. (Eat your heart out, Bill Gates!)
Oh, and -- everyone! -- please let me introduce another new friend, whose seemingly fierce LJ-name is actually made up of the first syllables of name of her four childhood pets. Seeing her sexy icon, I can just imagine her with cuddly kittens, etc...
I've been using Chrome for quite a while now. I notice that since the latest LJ update, if I click once to read other people's comments on an entry, I get "page not found." I now have to double-click to get to the comments page. Ugh.
You're right, Anais -- LJ seems to have dropped a bunch of changes onto us "without so much as a fare-thee-well..."
I'm still conflicted about how they brutalized one's home-page; all of a sudden, I'm supposed to know from "your current position in the Top Journals is: 872..." and "100+ new events..." (Yep, my un-subtle way of bragging that I'm currently a mere 871 journals away from being TopDog in this here kennel.)
And, as I wrote last night, I have a hard time figuring out if it's LJ or my new Ubuntu op-system that prompts annoyances like "page not found." Well, better Ubuntu than the goddamned "she's dead, Jim..." whenever Windows7 wanted to assume control of my laptop -- seriously, have you ever got a message like that?
I'm more and more puzzled about WHO put out that "she's dead, Jim" (illustrated by a cartoon animal with "x's" for eyes -- macabre at best; but mean-spirited, in an insidious way...). It turned up many dozens of times -- every few weeks -- as Win7 unapologetically seized control of the laptop (a Toshiba -- I can't imagine the Japanese would have done such a thing) -- booting off whatever I was doing, so it could commune with the mother-ship.
Hey, great! You're among rather few adherents I've encountered. How'd you come across it?
It's nice not to be in the thrall of ol' Softie! The friend who set it up for me is outspoken against Microsoft's reported shortcomings -- really pissed at our collective vulnerability to its inefficiencies. I'm less hostile towards them -- but still pleased with how straightforward Ubuntu is.
My neighbor Carl. He is a programmer. And my tech support. I took enough computer classses to shudder when I hear the name Microsoft. But what I had heard Cloud is not bad at all. It is quite good.
Thank heavens for the Carls of the world! There's the literate and then there's the digirate! I'm a card-carrying member of the former; and a refusenik from the latter!
