What sort of games do you like? Both consoles share the majority of their games library (and while yeah, often games run a little smoother on the 360 than the PS3 there's very little in it lately) so it comes down to exclusives: Xbox has three Halo games and you can buy Halo 1 and 2 for the original Xbox and play them too; PS3 has two Uncharted games and a third out this xmas.

We have both and I think the PS3 is the nicer of the two: quieter, better built, nicer controller, and it can play blue-ray movies. But while I could live without Halo or Gears of War I'm not sure I could have coped with the dreadful PS3 version of Bayonetta.

well, i admit the games i play usually involve scoring touchdowns or killing members of the National Socialist Party between the ears 1933-45.
As my entire family says i have very limiting tastes when it comes to my gaming!

I agree with the PS3 version of Bayonetta, my bro had that (note past tense) and quickly got rid when he saw the Xbox version.
why are some games so good on one console but not the other?

anyway, thanks for the input, hope to make my purchase as soon as.

If shooting nazis in the neck is your thing, the Xbox is almost certainly a better bet. I *think* all the big war-type games (Call of Duty, Battlefield, and so on) are out on both consoles and in those cases the Xbox almost always has the better version.

As to why that is, long story short: the Xbox is a balanced console and more straightforward to get the most out of; the PS3 is a little more powerful but much more complex. Games made especially for the PS3 tend to look nicer -- Uncharted 2, Killzone 3, and so on -- but games made for both tend to look nicer on the Xbox because you have to use special tricks to get the most out of the PS3 and they don't translate very well.

If there's any game in particular you're interested in, Eurogamer may have done a comparison on both consoles: http://www.eurogamer.net/archive.php?platform=digitalfoundry&type=face-off
