I agree with you on the ending. I was under the impression we were going to get a lot more about Sam's yr in this epi and we really didn't.

I'm willing to wait if I'm confident that the arc's gonna be good. In this case, I don't think it will be. :/

I kind of find it hard to believe that he and Jess never did that sort of normal, you know, picnics and birthday cakes and stuff.

I thought so, too. And in my canon, Dean's always tried giving him that, so perhaps a birthday cake shouldn't be a foreign thing at least when they were kids.

After reading zimshan's meta, though, I can totally get why that flashback (or all the other Sam flashbacks, really) was shot that way. You should check it out, too! :)
