On of my favorite new websites is Uni Watch, a blog written by Paul Lukas to supplement his regular column at ESPN. Before he was at ESPN, he wrote for The Village Voice until the sports section was discontinued in 2003, (archives here) and Slate.com (archives here).

Two days ago, Lukas posted about the University of Oregon's new uniforms, and ( Read more... )

I mean, honestly. Does that fast dreadnought have TWO transwarp drive nacelles, and a further TWO regular ones? Come on. That's just ridiculous. The warp dynamics alone would make such a design cumbersome if not dangerous. Scotty is spinning in his grave as we speak.

Not to mention, why would you go through all the work to put on some Galaxy-class warp drives on a Sovereign-class ship? Seriously, if you need more propulsion, why not go the extra mile with additional transwarp drives and do it right. I would hope Starfleet wouldn't be so half-assed about such things, because I'm sure one of those ships takes a lot of coin to build.

Fuhreal.

Although maybe it represents some kind of test-bed hybrid of post-Transwarp technology in a pre-Galaxy-class design? On the other hand, it might just be some seventeen year old Trekkie's wet dream. The jury is out.

I once designed a frigate that looked like an updated USS Reliant. I'm sure it's long gone now, but from what I remember, it was as crudely drawn as that second one. Those were the days ...

I'm almost afraid to look (ok, I am afraid to look), but I'm sure I've got a hand-drawn design or two at my mom's place somewhere.

For an art project I once airbrushed a scene of a Daedalus-class ship. I know I have that somewhere.

Dude, I LOVE Uni Watch. I obsessively click on the links and get all hyper-critical like, well, like a fashionista commenting on the lastest Mizrahi or what Angelina Jolie wore to the Oscars. Actually, I'm kinda grateful that we, as Men, have an analog to what's shown on E! for women.

Somehow I knew you had to be in on Uni Watch! That's really awesome.

What do you think abou those Cool-Flo helmets? I shudder every time I see one on the tube. No way you'd get me to wear one of those things.

Oh man, that Cool-Flo shit has got to GO, and fast. It's not as noticeable on the teams that have the single-color helmets (like the L.A. Angels) but when I see it on the Mets players I want to hurl. I can't imagine it makes that much of a difference, and it looks like something out of TRON.

Jeff Kent switched back to the old-school lid after his beaning, so I wonder if the Cool Flos are as safe. That said, the Mets always look strange. They really need some help.

Have you seen the cool retro-look catcher's helmets Joe Mauer and Mike Redmond are wearing?
