Okay, I'm a bad person. I haven't been on here for a while. Posting or reading. So... If you've said anything really great lately, please do let me know about it.
Re: class - Huzzah!! Glad to hear about your class.
Re: books - Freecycle? Also, I'll probably have some ex-textbooks that I could donate to the cause. I'll try and sell most of them this week, but those that will get me no value would otherwise have just ended up in the recycling. But I could give them to you instead!
I need to try Freecycle, indeed. I posted on Craig's List, but have received no responses.
As to textbooks... I certainly appreciate the thought... But if they're the big heavy hardcover 'classic' textbooks, they're likely bigger and heavier than I'm looking to carry. Of course, if they're a more realistic type of textbook I'd love 'em! :)
Yay for not having to take the class over again!! Just goes to show sometimes all you have to do is ask (or complain, whichever works). Oh, and I'm sure this has already occured to you, but will there be another library book sale before you go to burning man?
The book sale ends with a half off day. Which use to mean you could get books for as cheap as 25 cents. However, prices went up this year and even on half off day the cheapest you'll get is 50 cents. (Still not bad, but not nearly as good.)
I (or rather my parents) have a self inflating air mattress you can probably borrow if you like. It's a twin, relatively thin (about 1"), intended for backpacking. I also have 2 or 3 foam pads, which is what I usually bring and sleep on, and may be able to get you access to a more bulky twin air mattress + pump if you like
( ... )
I would perchance borrow the air mattress but we shall see. I don't care for borrowing lots of stuff.
I'll probably still want to take four pieces of re-bar just because I'm the worrying sort.
Any books that go may come back, but it shouldn't be counted on. My idea is to get a bunch of stickers made up (like what SPL puts on their honor system / uncatalogued books), sticker each book and attempt to hand them out. It would be intended as a 'library' system. Take a book. Return it for another. I rather imagine that few books will actually be taken and returned before the end of Burning Man. Most will probably just be taken.
What I am truly curious about is the potential long term results of such a project. Would anybody the following year bring back a long since finished book to return?
Any donations (preferably paperback, preferably not huge) would be gladly accepted. But they would get stickered, and who knows if they'd come back or not.
What I've found works really well when I go camping is to have a half or less of a roll of toilet paper, squish it mostly flat, and stick it in an appropriately sized ziplock bag. I do that mostly to keep it from getting wet, which is less (but not entirely gone) of an issue at BM, but I imagine it'd be nice to not have it be-playa'd too.
I still need a ticket, so if you're worried about not getting rid of it, add me to the waiting-list.
Air mattresses are meh. I brought a nice self-inflating one, and while the first year took it's toll, the second killed it outright. You might try the big-ass foam pads they sell at Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart. They're cheap (like $10 I think?), they don't puncture, they don't sag, and you don't have to plug them in. If you spill stuff on them, they're a goner, but that's largely true of the self-inflating mattresses too.
Good point on the pilot...the earlier you plan that the better. I should get a hold of Andrew. He knows the San Jose group that flies up to the burn every year. Maybe one of them could take you up.
Assuming Test-tube Baby continues to balk and spin me un-arguable reasons why he can't abandon real life for that long... And I seem to recall Gary the Froggy King already picking up a ticket somewhere. Yeah... Not much goin' on with that ticket. It's from the lowest pricing tier too.
*If*, I know you're planning to haul a lot already, but if you were able to haul my shit I'd say that'd be a certain definite discount on ticket price there. I was thinking I might try something like that. Instead of just selling the ticket outright, try to barter in getting my shit down to the dessert, since I'm really not sure how I'm gonna do that yet.
And if you know anyone flying in this year that would be awesome! Aside from making random posts on Tribe, I really have no real ideas for trying to track down pilots...
