We are watching this, but we just finished ep3, and haven't seen all of ep4 yet. But we've all seen the gifsets of Ethan and Dorian from ep4, so we're spoiled for it. (In a "still looking forward to it" way

I can't decide if he knows, or doesn't know. I mean. The scene with the wolves made me go, what?? He told the others to stay back, but he approached the wolves like he expected them to obey him. That was weird. The whole scene was weird; everyone else was sort of like, WELL OKAY, let's go then! And I was scratching my head.
Proteus was lovely. All that emotion, and then they wasted it. Sometimes the point of gothic horror is not the horror, it's the sense of dread, and on that point, the show is failing quite a bit. Less gore, more goth, please.
At the time, it did feel like he knew what he was doing when he approached the wolves. But looking back on it, I could read it as him doing something he felt compelled to do, gambling on it, but not consciously knowing how it would turn out

I so agree. I loved all those scenes with Proteus and Victor too, and the very first scene made me cry actual tears. It was gorgeous. I feel quite a bit like all that was wasted on a lesser plot and lesser actors, and it annoys me.
Dorian and Ethan doesn't annoy me. Unless that is all we get of it, and then yes, I will go back to being annoyed. *g*
I think he knows he's a wolf, but he doesn't know what he does when he wolfs out. So who knows who's actually doing the killing (or even if he really did whatever his father needed to pay off?)
I watched all 4 episodes all at once, which helped with the 'are we going to answer any of these questions that we've raised?' issues. I may wait until the other 4 air so I can do it again, because I would also like a few answers, no matter how much I'm enjoying the look and feel of the sets.
That's a smart strategy, watching in blocks. I was doing that for the first couple eps, but now I'm caught up, and it's harder to wait. Heh. I hope we eventually get an answer on the dad-paying-off thing, too.
I haven't been talking to many fans of this show, so it's fun for me seeing so many people having basically the same reactions to the characters and plotlines as I do. The near universality suggests something. *g*
I've been fangirling Eva Green since seeing her in 300: Rise of an Empire; in fact, she's why I bothered to check Penny Dreadful out.
Eva Green is awesome in everything. I loved her so much in Casino Royale; she was not the typical female Bond movie lead, which is fitting since Craig isn't the typical Bond. I'm going to see Rise of an Empire just for her. *g*
I feel that you have to know going in that 300: Rise of an Empire is ridiculous to really enjoy it; I did. *g* There's a thing with a horse at the end that was so OTT that my friend and I started cackling, and since we saw The LEGO Movie earlier that day I started softly singing "Everything Is Awesome!" at her.
Since I wasn't aware of Eva Green before that movie, I had to get used to her being dialed down more for Victorian sensibilities in Penny Dreadful. In 300: Rise of an Empire she's a warrior goth dominatrix who's fierce even standing still and dominates almost everything in front of her.
Penny Dreadful has been renewed for a second season consisting of 10 episodes.
It's a weired one, isn't it? Like you, I don't find all characters equally interesting, but for some reason I really enjoy the way the story is told - I find the vagueness and randomness of what happens intriguing. I also appreciate a show that manages to surprise me - I did see Protheus death coming, and neither the kiss. Well, that's not true - during that scene I kept thinking that if this was a man and a woman (or fanfic), they would be making out now, but I never even considered this as something that might actually happen. And then it did.
But I can totally see that the way things unfold can easily be frustrating and annoying for watchers. Well, lets hope that the fact that Sam Mendes is associated with the project is a good omen, but I guess we won't know until the season is done either way.
I am such a Sam Mendes fangirl. I would like to think that his hand in this will keep it steady and on track, but we shall see. It's a very short season, which worries me because they have quite a lot of stuff dangling right now. I totally agree with you tho about the element of surprise and switching things up. That aspect of the show is a pleasant change from what I expected.
I've heard they've already been renewed for a second season? Which is good. But they would have had to finish this first season without knowing that, so it makes me wonder how they will have chosen to end it.

For me, all of those scenes between Proteus and Frankenstein in the second episode were pretty wondrous. Until it ended badly.
I am certainly interested to see what happens next with Dorian and Ethan.

Possibly that is the most awesome sales pitch for this movie that could ever be made! *g*
