There are seven dates left, so please give me topics! Meanwhile, today harrigan asked: tell me about a book that you really enjoyed wallowing in. The literary version of comfort food. (And by literary, I don't mean classy!) From recent years and/or a reading pleasure from long ago.Several books leaped immediately to mind, but I have to be honest; there's ( Read more... )

I've heard of Grace O'Malley (My username is harrigan for a reason...) but I'd never heard of that book. (Adding to my library queue!)

I find it fun/interesting to read romance books written before feminism was much of a movement. (Most of what I have read in that genre has tilted toward romantic suspense rather than historical romance, e.g. Mary Stewart.) Thanks for sharing!

Heh, I'm never sure if I'd like a book as much as an adult, if I read it when I was mostly still a kid, but I am pretty fond of this one. I hope you like it! I tend to not read books written before feminism, and/or books full of sexism. (See: Heinlein.) But I like TV that swings that way (The Hour, Masters of Sex, Mad Men) so perhaps I have faulty wiring.

Dec 18

How do you think age affects fannishness and fan writing? Do you feel your interests are richer? Are you tired of the same old tropes? Etc.

Love Bertrice Small's stuff! They're like cotton candy for your brain, only sweeter. Have you read THE KADIN? Again, based on real characters, sorta.

You may recall a short fic *cough* I wrote once called The Seventh Wave. If you look hard enough, you will see The Kadin imprinted all over it. *g*

OH, I remember that one! Of all the bodice-ripper romance novelists, Bertrice Small could hit alllllll the tropes like no one else. (Except maybe Rosemary Rogers, who more or less invented the genre to begin with .) In that era, I think it was a huge step forward to say that women could like and enjoy sex, and like and enjoy reading about it. Consent issues were mere trifles in the face of that, koff.

I'd say it was less of a trope now (consent issues and the like) except that Fifty Shades of Gray would prove that a lie, sigh. And I don't venture into the category romance section hardly at all, but there are lots of sheikhs and alpha-CEOs running around. Let's just say that at least now there are a ton of writers who *don't* find consent issue sexy, enough that I don't have time to read through all of their work so I don't have to deal with the others.

Yeah. I still find it sort of sexy. Otherwise, what would be the point of A Captive Prince? WHICH I LOVE A LOT. (I am assuming you know the book of which I speak, but if not, I can provide deets.) Of course, she disposed of that issue by making them fall in love and whatnot, but you know. Details. Just like a romance novel, really. *handwave* *g*
