Dec 11, 2013 07:29

There are seven dates left, so please give me topics! Meanwhile, today harrigan asked: tell me about a book that you really enjoyed wallowing in. The literary version of comfort food. (And by literary, I don't mean classy!) From recent years and/or a reading pleasure from long ago.Several books leaped immediately to mind, but I have to be honest; there's ( Read more... )

Somehow I missed yours! Well, I know how: busy. But I will go back and add! I've been trying to leave questions for everyone.

Skye O'Malley sounds fun!

- and oooh Constance Gluyas! I used to love the couple of her books that I found. My favourite was Born to Be King (a fiery tempered cross-dressing woman in Bonnie Prince Charlie's army, and a deliciously confused hero about his attraction to the "lad". She stabs him, thinking he's a traitor. Proto-slasher me was intrigued)

She really knew how to bring the historical bodice-ripper in a big way. *nostalgic sigh*

Have you ever read Fanny by Erica Jong? Your description of Skye O'Malley really reminded me of it. Except that Fanny is a) erotic rather than romantic, b) feminist in a second-wavey kind of way, and c) hilarious. Still intensely problematic, but it scratched a lot of similar itches for me when I was a teen.

Interesting! No, I've never read anything by Erica Jong. Problematic doesn't bother me much in older books, unless it's written by a man. (see: Heinlein. He is always my example of nope.) In which case, I just can't.

She's definitely of her time. The book is a retelling of Fanny Hill, so it's another woman who became a pirate and it's all about her sexual adventures, with dodgy consent and so forth. The prose is lush and the content faintly ridiculous, but it definitely worked for me. There are images in there I've never forgotten.

LOL, I admit I still occasionally read romance novels of the candy floss kind---thankfully the whole consent issue thing has gotten way better than what I remember it being when I used to sneak in romance novels as a teen :)

Oh and questions for um Dec 27th:
What are things that make you fall for a particular ship? Does it play a major reason why you are fannish about a show or does it come later? (or just depends?) Has there been fics that have made you reconsider a particular OTP (examples and recs welcomed :) ?

That question is somewhat similar to one I'll be answering on the 22nd - I may end up pointing to that one, for most of the answer. *g* You can pick another question if you like, or I'll just run with this one!

I have nothing against romance novels at all -- my tastes just changed to non-fiction and fantasy as I got older. But I read my way through the complete Barbara Cartland catalog, when I was young. Oh yes I did. And I'm proud of it. *g*
