This is actually the first time I've gone into Festivids with some song ideas in mind, but I also offered fandoms (safeties all) where I had no idea what music I'd use. I still don't, but so far I've found that I can reliably locate a movie-appropriate song in 3-4 weeks, which still gives me enough time to make a movie vid.

I don't think I'd offer a non-safety fandom unless I had song ideas, though.

FWIW, I almost never have song ideas when I offer a fandom. I just offer fandoms I love and then let panic and necessity take over, although I do - just for festivids - keep a running list of songs that I think would be fun to vid, that I can consult once I know what I matched on. When I have an assignment, I go through the list, and then just troll youtube and go through my song collection and listen to songs I've forgotten about on my CDs, etc, and so far that's worked reasonably both for assigned vids and pinch hits (as mod I'm kind of the pinch hitter of last resort, so.) Treats, though, only get made when I have a particular song in mind from the outset that inspires the treat.
