Summary: Sam is going to Stanford, though. He's packed his bags, got himself a bus ticket, and is having one last row.
Ruin
In late August, Sam leaves for Stanford.
His fight with John is the biggest they've ever had. The barbs they wield with the same skill in which they use knives are well worn, familiar attacks. Dean has heard each so many times in his life but none of it has ever staggered him quite like this.
Sam is going to Stanford, though. He's packed his bags, got himself a bus ticket, and is having one last row.
Dean honestly doesn't know what to do. It's not often he feels helpless but little Sammy has always been able to wring that feeling from him. Sam is leaving and nothing he's done has stopped it.
Sam spins around, turning his back on their father. His chest is heaving and he looks near crazy, he's so angry. Dean can't take his eyes off him. And Dean must be quite the sight too because when he catches Sam's eye, his brother's mouth smooths a little around the edges. Then Sam is marching across the room and catching Dean in a ferocious kiss, all teeth and wicked tongue. He does it right there, right in front of dad and Dean doesn't have time to react to it before Sam pulls away, just barely.
"Try to understand," Sam whispers to him. "Just try, Dean."
And then Sam is carrying himself back across the room, grabbing his bags on his way to the door.
"You walk out that door," their dad growls, "don’t bother coming back."
Sam doesn't even hesitate.
