"No, sir." She stands a little distance away, a pretty young woman with a quiet air. "It isn't anybody's, the best I understand; but it's safe. Do you need any help?"

Welcome! :D

Neil turns to face this strange person. "I'm sorry. I know the house isn't mine, because... well, let's not go there." The narrative voice, however, for elucidation's sake, is quite willing to go there: he left his house burning with another unfortunate's corpse tucked into his bed. "I was just looking for my medicine cabinet. I hope that wasn't your picture." His voice is starting to lilt a little, suggesting that while his stilted speech had started in pain, he was now stunned instead by the girl's good looks.

Thanks! What's this char. from, out of curiosity?

"No, sir." She smiles at him, a polite smile; slightly wistful, but then she has that look in general. "There's the closet and the upstairs bathrooms; or I can get a doctor if you need one. There's usually one about."

Equally obscure sci-fi novel! :D Port Eternity.

Neil shakes his head, and focusing on his former need for meds is, ironically, bringing back the pain he'd temporarily forgotten looking upon this girl. "No," he says, his voice strained anew. "No doctors. I'm going to end up like the man, if I don't finish my work..."

Cool! But let's go see what Wiki tells me about it (and Emily)

Ashley will just stand nearby watching him silently for a moment.

"Was there a fire?"

"There was." Neil is unusually terse on that point. "But not here. I escaped it, just barely."

"And then you came here." Ashley speaks without inflexion.

"Evidently. It is not where I meant to come, but it is where I am. I'm still trying to get the lay of the land."

Neil gives this man a weak smile. "I'm not well. But it's all right. I have company, and I think a woman was going to get me some Vicodin. At least I hope it's Vicodin."

I know the feeling. Neil's author has a way with dialogue I'm still trying to get a handle on.

"Vicoden?" he asks, touching his ear. Kenner:translation: no equivalent. "I do not grasp."

Neil blinks. Of course, people who haven't been through the hospital wringer are fortunate enough not to know of this kind of thing. "It's... a really powerful analgesic. I don't like to complain, but the pain is terrible without it, and people know something's the matter. Much like you did."
