A traveller lost

Sep 30, 2006 00:49

She arrives on horseback, a black veil covering her face and hair. She dismounts, looking about herself in confusion. She has lost her guide, and her surroundings look very different than a moment before. Hesitantly, she draws back the veil, revealing shining black hair and lovely dark eyes.

. . . Felix?

*simply shakes her head, confused -- it's only one word, but one she doesn't recognize, and she doesn't know how to respond, except with a string of Arabic and an apologetic expression*

*and here's a smile -- and some halting Arabic --it's probably not that good, but can we give him points for trying?* I am Henry Clerval.

*it may be flawed, but it's her language, and so she'll perk up immediately upon hearing it -- her response, though, will be clearly enunciated (just in case he'd like to improve his pronunciation)* I am Safie.

*turns and looks at her, as well as her horse, rather scrutinizingly, but hey, he's got the mask on, so who can tell?*

Do I know you?

*She blinks, confused, and responds in Arabic, not expecting him to understand, but unsure of what else to do. It seems especially strange to her that a man should cover his face; she has always been taught to do so, but that is women, and women in her own land, which she would have left to marry her Felix. Then, since she must do something, she lays a palm flat against her breastbone, to indicate herself, and says--* Safie.

*tilts his head to the side, then pushes away his mask and reaches for a cigarette; and, after he lights it, taps his chest with one hand to indicate himself* Felix.

*stares for a moment -- she knows there must be more than one man in the world named Felix, but it's unnerving, just the same -- and then shakes her head, hoping he will understand that he is not the man she is looking for*

If there is one thing that will always get Francine's attention, it's a horse, so she runs up, straight past the strange woman, to pat it. "Horsey!!"

Safie laughs, delighted by the child's enthusiasm, and stands watching a moment. Then, hopefully, she points at the horse and says "Horsey?"

No one could say she is not willing to learn.

Francine nods vigorously and reaches up to try to pat the horse's nose as she starts babbling excitedly. "My daddy rides horses, he's a cowboy. He teached me how to ride a pony!"

Safie cannot begin to follow this, and so she'll just smile helplessly and shake her head.

*princes are, no doubt, supposed to rescue exotic and beautiful maidens, but we can assume that this isn't exactly why Hamlet's here. at any rate, he is here and he'll bow, all solemn--he knows a woman should have an escort and is concerned that this one doesn't (if he sounds suspicious, excuse him)* Come you alone, lady?

*she can't begin to guess what he's saying, but he seems kind enough, and so she's all the more frustrated that she cannot make any response. when she speaks, it's in Arabic -- however, it's probably fairly obvious that she means to say, "I do not understand."*

*ah-- and he understands that, but he's a bit thrown that he doesn't even recognise her language, let alone speak it* What strange tongue. *in French, for some reason* Speak you this?

*recognizes that he's switched languages -- recognizes that it's French, and that's what Felix speaks -- but doesn't understand it, and so she'll shake her head and repeat herself, still in Arabic*

*sensing from something about the confusion in her eyes that she may not speak Tabor's language, she approaches slowly with a welcoming smile, before stroking the horse's head with a practiced touch, to indicate she's also a rider*

*smiles as well, pleased by the friendly presence, and pleased as well that someone seems to understand that she doesn't know how to speak to them*

*scritches behind the horse's ears, smiling* She's beautiful. *and her tone will make it clear it's a complement, even if she cannot understand the words*

*puts a hand on her chest* I'm Tabor.

*smiles, pleased at that*

Tabor. *imitates the gesture* Safie.
