Sydney Carton leans in to read a sign, then leans back, eyebrows furrowed with exaggerated concern. To no one in particular: "Why, what is this? Surely you wouldn't be so cruel as to forbid me from partaking in my favorite, most cherished pasttime, drinking? It seems utter cruelty--" He pauses; then, with a look of mock revelation, exclaims happily, "Oh! The sign denounces drinking the water? Well, then. I am quite relieved. Water, I can live without."
