Something as dramatic as climbing a trellis or breaking a window was unnecessary. Burglars would do well to remember to be as subtle as possible, even when they don't have need to be, and in a manor there are always a number of doors where one can slip in undetected.

He cased the layout of the first floor, walking quietly, not that he really needed to, and stole up the stairs and down the hallway into Armand St. Just's bedroom, avoiding the occasional servant or lingering visitor easily.

The young man was sleeping deeply, but as a precaution the intruder reached into his coat and uncapped a small bottle full of a very useful substance. Drugging always made this sort of task easier...

Armand had only been asleep twenty minutes or so, so he wasn't as deeply asleep as he appeared. Exhausted yes, but even exhaustion couldn't quite cover the sensitivity of Armand's frayed nervous system. Just the presence of someone in his room drew him back to the surface of conscoiusness. Though, of course, his first thought was of his sister, not any danger.

So stirring, he mumbled, "What? Who's there? Margot?" And he sat up in bed, surprised that the room was still dark.

He sighed. "No," he answered soothingly, and woven into the simple word was a sense of calm far more powerful than just tone of voice could convey. It was infectious, and he knew that Armand would calm, especially in his drowsy state. "Just relax." And in the dark he moved the small bottle closer to Armand's face.
