I spent some time looking into Scarlet Pimpernel fandom, and I was very surprised at how much Armand St. Just is disliked and downright hated. Mostly for Eldorado. It's worse than Raoul de Chagny hate.
Are any of you surprised by how negatively the characters for your puppets are considered?

I don't loathe Cosette. I just find her a bit dull. The one that occasionally graces my unpublished continuation of Beyond the Barricade is a forminable young woman, with much to be admired. That had to have come from somewhere. Right?

Oh Mme. Pontmercy, I am sorry. You're a very kind and sweet lady.

Well, many people like Christine and you are rather mean to her. *coughs*littletoad*coughs*
Have I said that I didn't deserve the hatred? I do deserve it. I did every single one of those awful, selfish things that people hate me for. Just not here.
It just hurts that more people can't find it in their hearts to forgive me. It wasn't them I wronged, and Percy does forgive me, although it's more than obvious he never trusted me again.
If I was being petty I could just say it was all the Baroness's fault.

Carlotta, I quite enjoy you, but there has to be someone to hate, and Erik is too sexy.

Good question!
Both my puppets are quite well liked by their readers (this one has attracted a real live fangirl stalker, and the other's original source draws people who are senile or insane or both, and only come back if they're obsessive). I'm familiar with character hate, though-- in Potterfic, for example, I like Cho Chang a lot and have never understood why people bash her. If a character's particularly badly written I can understand it, but that's not usually the case. I don't and will never understand Raoul-hate. Sure, he's not as exciting as Erik, but he's quite sweet.

Don't feel too upset about it-- sit back and enjoy the notoriety.

I guess it snowballs. Why should people dislike Cho Chang so much? Harry treats her terribly. But these things work on bandwagon rules. I'm glad I don't join bandwagons that often.

Notariety? If I think about it too much I want to kill myself.

Typist: Oh, but Raoul, sweetie, I don't hate you anymore!
. . . I really wish you did. Then you would leave me alone. *frowns*
Typist: I'm wounded, Raoul. Absolutely wounded. Bad boy, no oranges.
. . . I'm sorry. . . don't take the oranges!

Maybe the issue there is people percive god-like beings as too hard to write because they are 'perfect' or worry that they'll be instant Sues/Stu's.

I think it is also the lack of concrete faces. The regular LOTR fandom wasn't very active in RPing and fan fic until the movies. Seeing actors humanizes the work. Myself I wouldn't dream of messing with Tolkein's world. Too scary.
