I spent some time looking into Scarlet Pimpernel fandom, and I was very surprised at how much Armand St. Just is disliked and downright hated. Mostly for Eldorado. It's worse than Raoul de Chagny hate.

Are any of you surprised by how negatively the characters for your puppets are considered?

They hate me?

aziraphale, emmeline grangerford, archie kennedy, y.t., joly, montparnasse, armand, sherlock holmes, la carlotta, zeus, raoul de chagny, namo, lord henry, watson, hestia, cosette, erik, phileas fogg, jareth

Typist: People LOATHE Cosette. Mostly musical!verse writers, but really! It's not her fault she's pretty and Eponine's psychotic!

I don't loathe Cosette. I just find her a bit dull. The one that occasionally graces my unpublished continuation of Beyond the Barricade is a forminable young woman, with much to be admired. That had to have come from somewhere. Right?

Oh Mme. Pontmercy, I am sorry. You're a very kind and sweet lady.

I am often surprised when I hear how much people seem to hate me. None of it was my fault!

I think they all just don't like your singing.

I sing quite well, thank you!

Well, many people like Christine and you are rather mean to her. *coughs*littletoad*coughs*

Have I said that I didn't deserve the hatred? I do deserve it. I did every single one of those awful, selfish things that people hate me for. Just not here.

It just hurts that more people can't find it in their hearts to forgive me. It wasn't them I wronged, and Percy does forgive me, although it's more than obvious he never trusted me again.

If I was being petty I could just say it was all the Baroness's fault.

Carlotta, I quite enjoy you, but there has to be someone to hate, and Erik is too sexy.

Good question!

Both my puppets are quite well liked by their readers (this one has attracted a real live fangirl stalker, and the other's original source draws people who are senile or insane or both, and only come back if they're obsessive). I'm familiar with character hate, though-- in Potterfic, for example, I like Cho Chang a lot and have never understood why people bash her. If a character's particularly badly written I can understand it, but that's not usually the case. I don't and will never understand Raoul-hate. Sure, he's not as exciting as Erik, but he's quite sweet.

Don't feel too upset about it-- sit back and enjoy the notoriety.

I guess it snowballs. Why should people dislike Cho Chang so much? Harry treats her terribly. But these things work on bandwagon rules. I'm glad I don't join bandwagons that often.

Notariety? If I think about it too much I want to kill myself.

. . . . trust me, I'm well aware of how much my fandom hates me. In fact, my typist used to as well.

Typist: Oh, but Raoul, sweetie, I don't hate you anymore!

. . . I really wish you did. Then you would leave me alone. *frowns*

Typist: I'm wounded, Raoul. Absolutely wounded. Bad boy, no oranges.

. . . I'm sorry. . . don't take the oranges!

Typist: The excessive Raoul-hate makes my stomach churn. He's so smishy -- I lurve him.

[Typist] Absolutely agreed. He's fun. And I loff him. And slash him all over the place with the Persian, but he doesn't need to know that. Really, though--why do I seem to be the only person with such an OTP? Everyone says, ooh, Raoul/Erik, love!hate, or oooh, Persian/Erik their love issotorturedexotic--but me, I-- *gets bonked in the knees by Bossuet* Hem, sorry. Right. Raoul rocks like retired La-Z-boy employee.

I quite understand. If it makes you feel any better, my typist has been in the Raoul fan-club from the beginning. She says that playing Raoul in the musical is "the most thankless role on Broadway," and she doesn't mean it because she dislikes you. I think you get even shorter shift in the movie adaptations of the book.

*hugs Raoul*

I've always loved you.

I don't seem to have any problem with writers hating me, only problems with the complete and utter lack of interest there seems to be for writing about Valar.
Maybe the issue there is people percive god-like beings as too hard to write because they are 'perfect' or worry that they'll be instant Sues/Stu's.

I think it is also the lack of concrete faces. The regular LOTR fandom wasn't very active in RPing and fan fic until the movies. Seeing actors humanizes the work. Myself I wouldn't dream of messing with Tolkein's world. Too scary.

Typist: I know what you mean, during my time deep in HP I knew one author who was a LotR fan but once said she'd never write for it because all the research would make it like writing a thesis. I've also seen at least one fanfic series in the fandom that has had extensive canon backup to everything to the extend that it looks like a thesis.
