*grins, cheerfully clasps hand* Pleased to meet you - is it Miss March, or would you rather I call you something else?
I'm afraid I have fought duels. It's not something I like doing. And yes, I can knight people now. Though I was only knighted last year, myself, so until then I couldn't. Being king doesn't have much to do with making knights, my lady. It's knights who make knights, though if king who is also a knight makes a person a knight, it's generally considered a bit more special.
And, for your last question: No, I've never gone on a quest for any grails. I did go on a quest last summer, though, looking for relics of Saint Camber. I'm afraid we didn't get far. Dughal and I spent most of the summer trying to rescue ourselves from an underground river - and we didn't find a thing!
*shakes! and grins back* It's Miss March, but I prefer Jo.
*gasps* You have?! It must have been terribly exciting. *considers* And also not much, though..as someone does usually end up getting hurt or killed. *nods* I'll remember that about the knights. It could be useful. *laughs* Your quest sounds like great fun.
*nods* It's a bit... nerve wracking. Better than battles, though. *smiles* Well, the quest was supposed to be fun. It was for the first week or so, at least. After that I'm afraid it was rather unpleasant. No one knew where we were, you see, so they thought we were dead. *guilt*
Is it? Interesting. I suppose my observations about diplomacy hold up even when there is no diplomacy. *grins*
Ah. Well, to be half-Deryni is - is - *pauses, struggling to articulate it* My mother Jehana was Deryni, though untrained. This is what I mean. I have her power, as well as my father's, though I've never really been properly trained in that side of it -
My sectary says you have no idea what I'm talking about. Which I suppose explains the girl giving me her hand. So I suppose I'll try to explain it. Deryni are people born with powers. We can compel truth, read lies and minds, and work magic. I don't read minds without permission, though. It's unethical.
Oh, fantastic. As if I haven't had enough trouble lately. *bows deeply* But! It is my duty, sir, to do what I can. I am fairly powerful, and I've won two magical duels fairly (and the one I won unfairly was not my fault at all), so perhaps I will be useful.
Well, welcome, I suppose. You may not want to advertise that you're royalty, hereabouts, although I suspect you may have gathered that already. My name is Vera. I am sworn to annihilate anyone who wears a crown, technically speaking, but here I would never have time to rest if I did so. And I have a bit of a bad history with keeping my oaths, anyway, I'm afraid.
Well, living under an oppressive monarchy all of your life tends to cause some bitterness, you understand. And it doesn't help that the old Czar and his advisors were responsible for sending my brother off to be worked to death in Siberia, either.
But as I said, I haven't proved to be very good at keeping that oath seeing as I sort of fell in love with the Czar's son and couldn't bring myself to kill him when he took the throne and anyhow, this isn't Russia and you aren't the Czar, and I've known at least one ruler who really did love and respect his people. So I won't be reaching for my dagger unless the need to do so is demonstrated, and you don't sound like a tyrant.
*genuinely sad* I'm terribly sorry, my lady. Heaven above, the things we do to each other...
I hope I am not a tyrant. I think Archbishop Cardiel would tell me if I were behaving like one. And Dughal certainly would. *fondly* He doesn't let me get away with being a fool.
I try very hard to guard my people and make certain that they are well. That is what a king is for, it's my sacred duty, and I will answer to God if I betray it and them.

An evil wizard showed up last night and did all sorts of terrible things. Could you help against him?

. . . Dmitri would be ashamed of me.
