It was dead strange.  It seemed that one moment, Lynet was in her bed - sick beyond help, and lonely - feeling that all the good had gone out of the world.  And now, but a moment later, she is standing in the foyer of some grand, strange house, not a thing like her cottage, or any castle she's known, and she feels ... quite well, actually.

It's ( Read more... )

"Aunt!" Florence, coming in through the kitchen, spots her and breaks into a smile. "Good day--"

"Ah, Florence," it's said with a half-sigh, relieved. She rises, and actually smiles, for all she still looks annoyed.

He gives her a little bow, and comes to her, offering his hands. "How do you, my lady?"

"Not well," in a tone that suggests it ought to be obvious, "But I guess I have my health, for what that's worth."

Dear God.

Just a few days ago he was telling Cimorene he didn't think his wife would ever come back, and to-day he wanders down the stairs (in his jeans and button-up shirt) and finds her in there. Just sitting there. The same as he always remembered her--well, maybe a little different around the edges, but-- her. Lynet.

He falls back a step, his knuckles whitening as his hand clenches on the stairrail.

"My lady?" very softly.

She twists in her seat, turns her face up to look at him. If she's surprised, she doesn't show it, though there's a faint smile around the eyes... maybe.

"God in heaven," dryly, "What a mess you look."

"I do not," he says, forced lightly. "I look well. And for once in my life I don't smell of foxes."

A little laugh, a smile even, "Aye, well there's something anyway."

"--my lady Lynet?"

Gareth probably should have learned by now that standing and gaping just leaves him wide open for any number of insults, but-- well, if he ever learned, he wouldn't be Gareth, would he.

She gives him a sharp look, "Well I'm not a ghost, sir. No need to look so."

He looks down, embarrassed. "I didn't expect to see you, my lady."

"Nor I you," simply enough said, though not without a certain force. "What surprises this day brings. And least of all, a kitchen-knave."

Ah, it's a cousin/sister in law. And frankly, after being married to Agravain, Laurel is very hard to intimidate, so she says mildly, "Good day, sister. Is something ill?"

"Nay, not ill," she glances up, then says, sharply, "Only confusing."

She raises an eyebrow, then says, "You are not where you expecting to be, I take it."

"Very much not," there's an edge to it, but maybe that's expected. "Though you seem at ease enough for both of us."
