the dragon's daughter

(Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more of King Arthur’s children unaccounted for…)

Goewin is looking for Lleu.

She is Arthur and Guinevere’s daughter, Lleu’s twin sister and his senior by a few scant minutes. She’s not sure whether she’ll find him alive or dead-or worse, some terrible state in between-and she may be so fixed on ( Read more... )

Well then. Here's mummy, Goewin.

The only thing is... she's about your age. She is sitting on the porch, sowing crewel - and Lleu is probably not far, since they are roommates of sort since Gwen's attempt at escaping the Mansion.

She, of course, has no clue who Goewin is.

She has come up the porch steps and sees Gwen, and her reaction is like Lleu's first reaction: utter bewilderment.

"Mama?" It comes out of her mouth without thought, and she is immediately hugely embarrassed when she realises that someone this young cannot possibly be her mother. For politeness' sake she puts down her spear, and curtseys deeply.

"A thousand pardons, lady, I am overwrought."

Whhaaaat? Guinevere stares half a moment before she gets herself back together.

"Nay, nay, this well. Mine ward hath told me I remind him of his mother, and now thou remindst me of him in turn."

She gives her a sweet smile.

"I am Guinevere."

"Guinvere! But that is my mother's name, Gwenhwyvar in her native tongue..."

She says cautiously, "Are you the mistress here?"

Kay doesn't immediately recognize her either, though she presumably looks enough like Lleu that the steward pauses, frowning a bit.

well, just to add to the general confusion, Caius is one of the people she has organized into her rescue mission; and like Lleu, it will take her some time to notice that he's any different to the man she thinks he is.

She looks up at him and says without preamble, in frustration, "God help me. I can't find their trail again here, without the snow."

He raises both eyebrows. "That would be a problem." At least he, unlike her parents, is somewhere near the age she'll expect. His speech patten, though, may be slightly off, and like Lleu, the little differences will probably quickly add up for her.

"Well, sir, have you any guidance?"

So, uh, speaking of Morgause's scions (that was an invitation, right?), Gaheris is engaging in his usual business of messing around on Morvydd's instruction ("get OUT OF THE HOUSE, coz!") when he stumbles across her, and immediately pulls back.

All suspicion and mistrust, she tilts the spear at him.

"Where have you come from, sir?"

"I don't know!" which is Gaheris' standard answer for a lot of things these days: I don't know, I don't remember, don't hit me! "I--Morvydd's."

That really throws her.

"Morvydd's? My cousin? Who are you?"

There is really no mistaking the resemblance. This time Mordred has the presence of mind to stay on the porch, with both hands flat on the railing. "Good morning."

She is bristling, in just about every sense of the word.

"Who in the name of God are you, sir?"

"No one you know," he says mildly. "My name is Mordred. And you'll be looking for your brother, I think? He's safe. He's around here somewhere."

She stands staring up at him, breathing hard.

"What are you?"

It is a measure of how disconcerted she is that she is trying to establish this before she reacts to the rather-more-important information he's so kindly supplied her with.

Her hand on the spear is very twitchy.

"Oh--!"

Courfeyrac stops dead as he comes around the corner of the house: tall, auburn-haired, and in full 1830s dress, because however much of a free spirit he may be, it's gotten cold around here.

He is also extremely wary, as a boy can only be who died by violence not that long ago. "I beg your pardon."

"Sir."

She straightens the spear so that it is not threatening him, holding it upright with its foot against the ground like a standard.

"What country, friends, is this?"

"I am sorry. I did not mean to startle you."

"No, no-- that's all right." He runs a hand through his hair, collecting himself. "Are you new here?"

"I'm looking for my brothers. A pair of travelers, lightly armed for hunting, one tall and fair and the other dark like me?"
