Martha happens to pass by at that very moment and looked at him, interest piqued. Shyly, she inquires, "How would you fly, sir?"

"i don't know," he says, "i've not done it yet. but it's a bit like mister nemo's ship, i think -- and why it doesn't sink even though it's all made of steel. and kites. it's especially like kites."

She blinks. "You're going to try to fly... using... a kite-like... thing?"

"You fly, sir?" Because nothing attracts Alessandra's attention like something shiny and new and probably involving colors. "Oh, I'd love to help!"

shiny new things with colors? she and ros should get on very well, then. "well, i can't fly on my own -- or at least, not very far -- but i'm building a thing. would you like to see?"

"Oooo, I'm invited, right?"

"well, i couldn't do it without you, could i? or at least, not properly."

"Really? Me specially?"

"of course -- !" beamity beam. "after all, you showed me elephants and fireflies -- the least i can do is show you flying."

Gringoire looks up from whatever he's doing when he hears that. 'You're not going to jump off the roof are you? I don't think you'd be airborne long!'

"... oh." ros steps back and looks up. "why didn't i think of that?"

Now Gringoire is truly startled. 'Good Lord! That wasn't encouragement!'

"but it's an idea, isn't it? i've got to start from somewhere -- but i've already got everything out on the lawn."

i suppose it must be, mustn't it, or else birds wouldn't be doing it all the time. or angels, except they don't do it all the time -- especially when they haven't got wings. *innocent* but i've been walking for as long as i can remember, an it's hard to break a habit, isn't it?
