Second Annual Holiday Fair

Nobody knows quite how it started, but soon it's unmistakable. Once again the stalls and tables have begun to cluster on the lawn, some of them bedecked with streamers and decorations, all of them laden with interesting things. The chilly breeze blowing up toward the Mansion brings laughter with it, and lively voices, and scents of cinnamon spice ( Read more... )

Mma Ramotswe has set up a little table, with a cup of tea she's brought from inside and a sign.

This table is draped with a bright-colored cloth, and laid out at one end with embroidered linens: napkins, towels, tablecloths, pillowcases, with intricate floral patterns or network designs in shining colors. At the other end are several batches of something resembling gingerbread, and a pot of hot cocoa.

Mary smiles at her with mild relief and comes to the table. "Oh, goodness, it has been a long time."

"Good day," with a friendly if slightly blank smile.

"Terribly long," she amends. "I do not believe we have spoken since last year--do you recall, I put a bit of my stitching on your table?"

Well, he did this last year.

Dug into the ground are two pairs of sticks. Strung between them are ropes from which hand strips of venison and rabbit jerk. Near them are piled deer leather and rabbit skins. There are also several smaller piles of less substantial things, like rabbit's feet and deer antlers.

Hawkeye himself is sitting nearby, leaning on a tree.

William has set up his little table with a pile of blank paper, a large pot of ink and several sharpened quills.* On the front of the table is a sign that reads "William DeWorde: Things Written Down" and looks a bit bored. There hasn't been anything to report here, since murders are fairly commonplace and people come back soon enough anyway**, so he's happy to have something to do.

So step right up, he'll write anything you dictate to him.***

* He lacks his usual stock letters, since he's not seen any dwarves who need to write home -- or anyone who needs to write home, really.

** Which is both inconsiderate and disconcerting, in William's opinion.

*** Provided it isn't vulgar or having to do with funny vegetables.

"What sort of things?"

"Most sorts. What is it that you need written down? I'll tell you if I can do it."

"I hate to disappoint, but nothing, really. I was just curious. Do you only do English?" he adds, after a moment.
