Miss Bennet, wearing a very lovely cream-coloured gown provided by the Plothole (true, she had asked for green, but as the Plothole has yet to recover its healthy, she is quite lucky to have received a dress at all and not a typewriter), is standing nervously by, waiting for the first guests...

One of whom may well be Mr William Hadley-Bright. He greets Miss Bennet with a smile and a formal bow, in keeping with his freshly polished boots and otherwise formal attire.

'Captain!' she exclaims, giving him her brightest smile and a curtsy. 'I am so glad you could come! How do you do?'

'Very well, Miss Bennet, and I should be far better were I assured I would dance with you this evening.'

A very, very delighted Mrs Watson will also be there, wearing her nicest late nineteenth century dancing dress--not the height of fashion, to be sure, because the Watsons, a young couple, are not particularly wealthy, but pretty enough. She is positively glowing with excitement.

An old-fashioned dress to Mrs Watson may seem very ahead of her time to Elizabeth, who smiles happily at her excitement and comes forward to greet her.
"Mrs Watson! I am so very glad that you have come!"

"Oh, I am so glad you arranged it. It is absolutely lovely."

"Thank you!" Elizabeth laughs. "Mrs Strange did most of the decorating, I confess; she has quite an eye for such things, while I have none at all. I have taste enough to judge, but none to be judged."

Tom has arrived in what he believes to be the height of fashion. He shined his shoe buckles, cleaned his clothes, and did his hair nicely. (He still looks rather hopelessly provincial but it isn't his fault that he has only ever gone to country balls.)

He stands somewhere off to the side, waiting for Molly or another suitable dancing partner.

Musichetta, who could turn snobbery into an art, floats past him in her own most-fashionable, and stands nearby, partnerless and watching the musicians.

Tom bows. "Might I have the honor, madam?"

She turns a haughty gaze on him, looking down her nose at him for a moment before giving a little shrug and putting out her hand. "I would be delighted. My name is Musichetta."

Fanny sees the notice in the morning and decides to attend (it will be her second ball). When eight o'clock comes she will be standing out in the hall, trying to gather the courage to enter.

I'm on Chapter 23 of JS&MN and find it very entertaining.

Ada, for whom it is a first ball, is standing outside doing precisely the same thing. She offers Fanny a shy smile.
