It is Palm Sunday. Therefore, Helen is going around, hitting people with pussy willow branches(palms being in short supply where she is from), and saying, "Лоза б'є, Я не б'ю, від нині за тиждень, буде Великдень!" It sounds like, "Loza b’ye, ya ne b’yu, vid nyni za tyzhden’, bude Velykden’!" and it means, "The willow is hitting, I’m not hitting,

Richard is trying to obey his promise to Tom to get out and meet people (especially male people as he's rather short on them at the moment in his collection of acquaintances). So instead of just being confused and wandering off, when he gets whapped with a branch, he says, "Excuse me, sir, but what was that for?" ...still confused, but at least polite.

She says the verse and smiles at him. "It is almost Pascha! Easter."

"Oh!" He sounds almost startled. "So it is. I... had lost track." He gives her a smile. "I am more used to palms, than willows, I'm afraid."

"There are no palms where I come from. We make do."

Alcuin will be in the kitchen making tea, and he looks up in confusion at a language he's never heard, more intrigued by her speech than her willow-branch attack. "What language is that?" He speaks in English out of habit, since most of the mansion does.

"Ukrainian."

[alcuin_delaunay]

"I've never heard it before." He smiles, intrigued. "Would you like coffee, or something to eat?"

[border_princess]

"Yes please. What would you suggest to eat?"

[dukes_daughter]

Rosalind (likewise yet in the guise of a boy) dashes up quite eagerly. "I have found a bow!" she declares triumphantly. "--and thou hast found... a stick?"

Helen proceeds to hit her with it, laughing, and saying her verse. She may hit her a little harder than the other people, but it is in a teasing manner

[dukes_daughter]

"Ah! Wherefore strike you me?" she demands, trying to look wounded but finding that her laughter rather belies this attempt.

[border_princess]

"It is almost Pascha! 'Easter' is coming!" Helen hits her again for good measure.

[three_smiles]

Michael has just come from his room--he's been working hard all week, and he still wears his leather apron, and there are scraps of shoe-leather sticking to the front of it, and his awl sticking out of his pocket--and when he sees her he stops and looks at her gladly. "Gospodah," he calls, softly.

[border_princess]

"Hello Michael! Happy Palm Sunday!" She comes up and hits him (more gently than anyone else) with the branches, smiling, and saying the verse about the willow.

[three_smiles]

"Happy Palm Sunday." He seems fairly to glow, all without his face changing its quiet expression.

"How are you today?"
