And if I'm not mistaken, the Bonneville Salt Flats were named after ancient Lake Bonneville. Or vice versa. Or I could be completely making this up. I dunno.

You are correct. Lake Bonneville was once a lake connected to the great Salt Lake. Now it is salt flats which flood when it rains creating a new smooth surface when it drys.
