I avoid water when I can't see what's in it, barefoot or not. I also don't look down when I'm swimming in a body of water where I can't see the ground. I grew up at a lake, and my older sister told horror stories of divers getting lost and their corpses floating to the surface, so I was always afraid to look down and see a dead diver moving towards me.

That's worse than the dead people who aren't there in LotR.

I'm much more mundanely worried about things like broken glass and rusty tins - and mysterious things that might bite, even if there aren't any :)
