Let me start this post by saying: I am not a patriot.

Granted, I've already had my friend Matt call "shenanigans" on this statement. As far as he is concerned, a patriot is someone who loves their country so much they are invested in the direction and outcome, and I certainly grumble and bitch about the system enough that it is clear that I care

Yeah, I am some flavor of patriotic about America (mostly about the first amendment, really) and generally being in DC was a serious trip, and I need to go back for things just like this.

every time i go to DC, i stop at the national archives to see the founding documents of our country. Its amazing to be in the same room as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Powerful documents that are short, succinct, and to the point. Just a few pages that created this nation.

This is awesome. I had different emotion reactions, yet similar in concept to seeing one of the actual signed copies of the declaration or independence in Philly...and the shuttle in DC, and the wright brothers wind tunnel and their flyer, and the Lincoln Memorial. Like you I'm not a flag waver, but there's something in the pure ideological concepts that were laid down that I cling to.

I know exactly how you feel. One of the reasons why I love the ever-so-cheesy movie National Treasure is because Nicolas Cage's character sort of embodies that same feeling for me. When they're in Independence Hall and unrolling the Constitution and he stops and has a moment and says, "It's just that... the last time this was here... it was being signed." Every time I watch that movie, I kinda get a little patriotic chill up my spine for what our founding fathers tried to build.
