today is new year's day

and now for something completely irrelevant to most of you:

the chinese yuan (kuai, baby!) is no long fixed to the dollar. now that it's floating against a basket of currencies it's strengthened by 2.1% (i.e. 8.11 to the dollar). I should have opened up a chinese bank account when i had the chance.
