help me not to respond to dS anon

Oct 18, 2013 01:38

I left a long rambling comment of incoherent love on Garonne's brilliant fic The Way the World is (I think there's a clue in that title, anon), and got a reply from an AO3 guest calling themselves "I just don't get it". I don't want to respond on AO3 because it's Bad Manners to have an argument in the comments to someone's fic, but it's late and I' ( Read more... )

Thank you! That is a most excellent reaction gif, and I know we're dealing with a person who has issues which they deal with through internet trolling on the subject of due South and perceived bias against RayV, but TWO REALLY WONDERFUL LONG STORIES just appeared with RayV being happy in a relationship with a guy/two guys, and yet "fandom has to make RayV homophobic" NOOO ANON NOOOO! Let's just NOT GO HERE AGAIN.

Oh, deputy, bb...anyone who is anyone in our fandom has been trolled by dS_Anon. This person's comments are too pathetic and willfully ignorant to rate your attention.

You are right of course. I have only ever advised others on dS anon from afar, and when it's someone else it's much easier to say "don't respond! It's what the troll WANTS!" When it's me, I want to dive in there! BUT I WON'T.

Although, it's interesting because I thought about what they said - AM I stereotyping Italians and Catholics? IS fandom unfair to RayV? And then I thought, uh, no. No I'm not, and no it isn't. So it's good to have that settled.

Ah ok yes that's exactly who I thought it was. The tone and phrasing of the anon rants was familiar from comments I got approving of my fic a Thousand Colours of Water, but still criticising that I wrote Fraser as not telling RayV about his relationship with RayK right away. I went down a route of schmoop in my story but I really, really like Garonne's take and let's be honest, hers is probably more likely than my hearts-and-flowers AND THEN EVERYBODY LOVED EACH OTHER version. And I do love me some angst in a story, especially because I can't manage to write it very well myself ( ... )

That's the thing isn't it? I WANT it to be recorded how I rebut their comment, but at the same time I KNOW it is futile and nobody else reading the fic/my comment will come to the conclusion Anon did, and Anon will not listen whatever I say. And yes now it's the morning I again feel that Anon probably has a less than happy life if this how they respond to dS fanfic on the internet, and I don't want to fight with an unhappy person looking for a reaction. So this is me, walking away, like a grownup.

"it's as if you could use some of the same wrestling with cognitive dissonance and long-held but erroneous viewpoints that is illustrated in that very fic! le sigh."

OH THE IRONY. Sometimes Internet trolls are almost like performance art, aren't they? So perfectly pitched you wonder if someone's doing it on purpose as a sort of interactive meta-commentary on the nature of - something.
