I think it's pretty impossible to be bug-free in Georgia without getting an exterminator to regularly spray.
We had bugs when we first moved into the house, and got Orkin to bait and spray. They spray every two months now, and only every now and then does a bug slip into the house (usually a silverfish or one of those black housespiders). You can probably do a home treatment every 3-4 weeks with stuff you find in a store for about half the price of a professional.
Ants, though, are quite a bitch to get rid of. They tend to keep coming back. Of the people I've talked to that mentioned ant problems, none of them had a professional exterminator, so that might be what you need to get rid of that problem.
I suppose you're right, but it isn't fair! They shouldn't be able to get in.
Yea, I'll probably have to do that, because damnit, I can't afford to actually get a regular treatment. I'm already terrified because I can't afford to get a regular termite treatment... Joel says his mom never gets one, but... I don't know. We keep getting this ads/junk mail saying we should get someone to do it, you know?
I suppose so... Stupid ants. If we can just cut them back, that's fine with me... just... not so many of them.
Since your house is new construction, it should be guaranteed from termites for two years. I believe this is the case in most Georgia homes due to the high risk of termites here. Most new construction should use treated wood that keeps them at bay for two years.
We have passed our 2-year mark and we really need to get the house and yard treated, but it's really expensive (our quote for 10-year protection was over $1,000 - not including yearly maintanance of the bait/treatment for over $100/year). I'm not extremelly worried though because the only wood in our house is the frame itself. The siding is vinyl, we have no basement, and we have no second-story. Also, we cleared out the wood mulch in the flower beds and are now using that rubber stuff.
I'd double-check that 2-year thing with either the construciton company or the people who sold you the house. Until you can afford the proper treament, cut back on the wood surrounding the house and wood on your home that is exposed.
Our house is wood everything but foundation, and external siding and decorative red brick. I can't cut down on the outside wood (don't think there is much, though) because we're a townhome and don't get to control the exterior...
As for exposed wood... umm... wood floors in powder room, foyer, and kitchen, and wood cabinetry...? Don't think it's too possible.
Hopefully the 2 year thing holds... we've only been here less than 3 months.
Are you allowed to post the info for the scanner? That sounds really great and come August (well, come NOW actually) I could use the spare cash or coupons or whatever they see fit to send. @_@
TOTALLY. They're awesome. At least, hopefully they are. The people are really responsive... but slow as crap to get things fixed... and hard to understand because I swear the call center must be in iraq or something...
But see, they contacted me through some junk mail. XD So I don't know how to sign up otherwise. I can give you their 1800 number, and you can tell them I referred you? Don't know if they'll be hiring in your area, but it's worth a shot, yes? XD
