Monstrous, isn't it? I keep hoping this Twilight fad will die away, but I swear, it's like a cockroach, it just keeps scuttling on, impervious to everything. Ick.
It IS. It makes me pity the tweens growing up right now, having this as a "role model", so to speak, believing that that I am not kidding that I openly gag whenever I have to walk by a Twilight themed section in a store. Now there will be another one to roll my eyes at. Oh, goody. "Powerful, romantic messages" ORLY? The only message SMeyer has given out is "you are a worthless human being without a boyfriend and if he should ever leave you, the only thing left to do is fling yourself off a cliff. " Right. Powerful MY ASS.
I thank god I grew up with well-written stories and strong female characters, which is something this fandom will never know.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who gags and shudders and has to walk on by past anything Twilight themed. I was in the mall the other day and they had giant posters advertising the latest movie on the lift doors, and I refused to take it and took the stairs instead. I was not standing there staring at those three. Urgh.
And yeah, I think they are damaging to young girls, who are too young to know any better. I mean, hell, I grew up reading Enid Blyton and other books written in an era when girls were expected to be wives and mothers (which were dated, to be fair, by the time I was reading them), and even those female characters were stronger and more independent!
Oh no, I'm entirely with you on Twilight! I'm a librarian and I obviously don't hold with burning books, but I'd make an exception for Twilight! I had to buy them for our library and I think a little bit of my soul died. My boss likes to tease me by leaving them on my desk when I'm not expecting it - I can rant for England about those damn books!
I really do think they are damaging to young girls. How anyone can think that Bella and Edward's relationship is romantic, when in reality it's not but an abusive relationship. It's unhealthy, co-dependent, controlling, manipulative, wilfully blinkered. It makes me sick to see young girls thinking this kind of relationship is the height of romance.
Inspired by the saga, these secrets reveal the relevance of Bella's experiences to your own love life, explain your feelings for Edward and Jacob and expose the perils of "Twilight"'s powerful, romantic messages
That line would almost make me believe it was a ripping of Meyer's schmaltzy "romantic" bullshit if it weren't that the rest of the summary implies that you can find true love with anyone, and especially by using a how-to book.
But don't you know? Everyone is destined to find their one true love. I mean, Bella is no Special Snowflake and she has found the love of her life, hasn't she?
Ugh, don't. Just don't. If I start rambling about this I might end up having a coronary!
I work part time in a video store and seeing those things every time someone rents them makes me wanna start screaming at them! Why on earth can't they see how crap the whole thing is? And then I get the girls/young women/older women who come in and ask me to reccommed "something romantic, like that Twilight movie, that was so romantic!" At which point I start muttering to myself and try not to throttle them. Few of them make the mistake of asking me why and then they get a lesson into why Twilight is so bad for you that you should never admit in public that you like it.... ARGH.
I have this urge to do what Dean is doing in my icon.
