Monstrous, isn't it? I keep hoping this Twilight fad will die away, but I swear, it's like a cockroach, it just keeps scuttling on, impervious to everything. Ick.
It IS. It makes me pity the tweens growing up right now, having this as a "role model", so to speak, believing that that I am not kidding that I openly gag whenever I have to walk by a Twilight themed section in a store. Now there will be another one to roll my eyes at. Oh, goody. "Powerful, romantic messages" ORLY? The only message SMeyer has given out is "you are a worthless human being without a boyfriend and if he should ever leave you, the only thing left to do is fling yourself off a cliff. " Right. Powerful MY ASS.
I thank god I grew up with well-written stories and strong female characters, which is something this fandom will never know.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who gags and shudders and has to walk on by past anything Twilight themed. I was in the mall the other day and they had giant posters advertising the latest movie on the lift doors, and I refused to take it and took the stairs instead. I was not standing there staring at those three. Urgh.
And yeah, I think they are damaging to young girls, who are too young to know any better. I mean, hell, I grew up reading Enid Blyton and other books written in an era when girls were expected to be wives and mothers (which were dated, to be fair, by the time I was reading them), and even those female characters were stronger and more independent!
