The general consensus seems to 'good riddance'. I confess, I'm very uncomfortable with that. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of being pleased at the death of anyone - particularly when it comes from people who talk about the damage she did to this or that, or the lack of care she had for this group or that group - and yet those very same people ( Read more... )

That’s the difference. I don’t see that those communities were destroyed by the government. I see that they were brought to end by the inexorable march of industrialisation across the globe. I don’t see that things would have been any different under any other government. Labour would have dragged the process out for longer, but the end result would have been the same, and waiting until the last possible minute would have simply made the adjustment even harsher. All of those communities were living on borrowed time, and had been since the day they were founded ( ... )
