Spent two days trying to read The Phantom of the Opera. Oh my god, no wonder that book went out of print a few times; it is impossible. Too bad, it's such a fun concept...I like Erik even better after finding out he is a master architect on top of being an ex-gypsy sideshow singer songwriter murderer extortioner emo-extraordinaire with a trapdoor

2 things:

1) It surprises me how DIFFICULT classic books are to read sometimes. They can be damn good, but most lack a latch-on-to-you-like-a-parasite-till-you-finish-it quality today's popular fiction thrives on. Goethe's Faust and the Once and Future King have rich backgrounds and settings... but reading the act of reading becomes a chore. WHY LITERATURE. WHY DO YOU DO THAT??

2)Brienne is a great character. I am so thoroughly annoyed with what the author has done with her (trying not to spoil). Anywho she is one of the few characters you can't feel bad about rooting for. So like you, I found myself skipping ahead to if she would show up. That's what is most annoying about Game of Thrones, waiting for more of your favorite bits.

Ooh, I've never actually sat down and read Faust through. Part of me wants to excuse Leroux because it was a translation and syntax moves on, but then there are all those older authors that ring clear as a bell - Dickens and Austen are the usual suspects but I like Le Fanu and Maturin quite a bit too. It's amazing all the factors that might or might not lead to a work aging well. The silliest thing on top of this is that after reading (or slogging) through a classical book, I have to shift my brain into modern mode. Does this happen to you? Things written now can often look so sparse in comparison and sometimes I don't know if it's average writing or that we just tend to get to the point a bit faster than olden timey people.

Wait, what spoilers? Tell me your thoughts, esp about Brienne (seriously, you're the first person irl i know who is reading this series. it's kind of boggling given its popularity) I'm caught up all the way to ADwD and don't care much if that volume is spoiled
