Trolls will be trolls

Introduction

I want to say right off the bat that this isn't personal for me. I'm not really in the Torchwood fandom anymore, I'm not much of a target, I don't post at torchwood_house (TWH) anymore, and I'm not even reading Torchwood fanfiction. My perspective through all of this has been one of emotional detachment and practical "oh, not this again". But my ( Read more... )

I've seen that virgin thing a few places. And being derivative is not the same as plagiarism. Wanna check out my early stuff? Total tanarian rip off, right down to some specific lines. I didn't mean to do it, it just happened because I was a sort of bad writer trying to imitate what I liked.

Thanks for pointing out this fic; I've been trying to make that connection ever since I read the wiad entry. And while sang is correct that derivative writing isn't a crime, in the context of the secret and the other behavior it's not altogether innocuous, either. It certainly fits the earlier pattern of what athaari did with kayliemalinza.

Thank you for writing this post. Silence never encourages the tormented, only the tormented, I think is what Elie Wiesel said.

The people described in the NY Times article sound sociopathic. Thanks for this PSA.

Definitely insane on another level, but things pop out at me, like here:

While reporting this article, I did everything I could to verify the trolls’ stories and identities, but I could never be certain. After all, I was examining a subculture that is built on deception and delights in playing with the media.

Which goes to the reasons for this post, really!

How in the world did she know she wasn't being played? They sound like the computer equivalent of con artists.

wow. what pisses me off about this the most is that i've become rl friends with some fandom peeps recently who have been affected by this. what makes me so angry is that they extended helping hands to this person b/c they wanted to help her/him out, which had to be a huge slap in the face when this all broke. damn.

I hope information can help. I know some people are tired of it, but others are only just hearing of it. I don't want more people caught off guard.

Thankyou for writing this post. Silence and filtered posts, while needed at times for discussion unfortunately does make the troll garner attention. Thankyou for giving everyone the facts for them to make their own decisions on.

As to everyone who has been affected by this- particularly the few I know that are upset as they extended a hand out, I am so sorry you guys got hurt. While fandom can be lovely, even on the outsides- it can also suck and play with emotions.

Dem, thankyou for the links of more troll information.

You're welcome. Fandom is a tricky thing in that it is both more and less serious than we treat it, and walking that line can be difficult!

Huh. I really like that comment, would you possibly mind if I use it as a future quote at times, with credit to you?
