The brown with the frown.

Man, what a grumpy day. There is some kind of Caribana thing going on at Dundas Square, so people keep coming into the shop to ask for directions. I have a theory that school is overrated. If you can just get your foot in the door by volunteering with a theater or taking an internship or something, then all you'll have to do is wow them with your skills and you'll be well on your way to the kind of job you want. Experience beats a certificate from a school any day.

I should probably mention that I am a giant pussy, and I have this thing where I feel like I can't go out and volunteer without having some kind of credentials (like a certificate) to back it up. You're probably right about experience being more valuable than a class any day, but actually going out and saying, "Hey, I rock the makeup, let me do it for this production!" FILLS ME WITH TERROR. At least school fills me with terror in a familiar sort of way.

Don't be scared! With volunteer work, they take whoever they can get, so in theory you should feel too snobby for it. I would recommend looking up a makeup artist or production director for a local theater and sending them some photos of your work. Let them know you're willing to work for free for a while and I bet they'll be knocking down your door. Seriously, free work is hard to find. Especially GOOD free work, and you're GOOD.
