The brown with the frown.

Man, what a grumpy day. There is some kind of Caribana thing going on at Dundas Square, so people keep coming into the shop to ask for directions. They like interrupting me while I'm with customers (because despite two other people on the floor who are all ready to help, people always have to ask THE BROWN GIRL where the Caribana stuff is).

In other news, there's an idea I've been kind of toying around with for the past few months. I finally went onto the website for the Yorkville School of Makeup and Esthetics to see about getting a Professional Makeup Artist certificate. I just wanted to know about prices, what kind of stuff you learn, exactly how much stage makeup and special effects you get to do, that kind of stuff. This is what I've found out so far:

1. The Advanced Certificate would cost me more than $15,000 in the end. That's twelve courses, plus the cost of makeup kits, airbrushing kits, tools and materials I would need. Jesus, that's a lot of fucking money.

2. I really only want to do makeup for the stage and special effects, but the pre-reqs for those courses are the Professional Makeup I course, and the pre-reqs for that are Colour Theory, Eyebrow Shaping and Skin Prep. I have to take all twelve courses to get the certificate anyway, but it makes me very tired to think that I'd have to sit through MONTHS AND MONTHS of eyebrow talk before I can be Rick Baker.

3. School! I am not good at school. I feel dumb and awkward and people there aren't used to me and my whimsy! I will have no friends in class and everyone will be like, half my age.

4. My classes would be in Yorkville, and I think part of it means I would have to work in their salon on clients. IN YORKVILLE. The kinds of people who get their makeup done in Yorkville are not really people I have the patience for.

5. Doing this part time would probably take like, four years. That's a lot of time and money I'm not saving for us to get married and buy a house.

I don't know. I don't want to work in retail forever, and it would be neat to get paid to do professional stage makeup for theatre, but am I really prepared for this kind of investment? It's looking like I'd have to sift through a ton of shit to get to the good stuff.

new project!, work sucks, lists
