Lies! You could give him one or two pellets every day if you felt thus compelled, but more than that seems excessive. I usually go with a few (around 4 or so) every other day.
Remember, the fish food people want you feed him every day so you use up more food and need to buy more. It's just a marketing ploy.
I figured it was something along the lines of "lather, rinse, repeat" (actually beneficial to hair, I know, but still) on the part of the pet food people.
My boyfriend, a very very picky person about fish care, feeds his betta twice a day. The key is to give them the right kind of food and not very much of it. Apparently, they get constipated very easily. You can give them flake food, I think, but it's better if they eat food made for them (partly because they're carnivorous). He gives his fish 3-4 pellets of beta food twice a day.
ETA: of course, he freely admits that a betta's perfectly capable of skipping food--and my bf's regularly does so when he comes to see me for the weekend--so maybe every other day is enough
I did buy actual betta food, but I haven't fed him yet today (I figured he should get acclimated first). I'm...thinking he's probably going to end up getting fed every day or so regardless, because I'm not exactly 100% with it when it comes to responsible pet care (hence a fish, not a, say, komodo dragon).
