Book Challenge

Jan 18, 2007 22:33

I stumbled across this challenge and I thought to myself 'What do I need to do?' (apart from pass this exam...) The answer came to me suddenly: Jake 2.0 fic! So, I will be attempting to make a dent in fanfic100!

The Challenge

Pick a novel (or book), preferably one of more than 100 pages in length, and take the first (full) sentence off of the top of page; 10, 20, 30, 40 & ect. Until you have ten (or thereabouts) quotes.
Take said ten (or so) quotes and write drabbles based on them. You can use the whole quote, or just a section, even a word - all that matters is that you stay faithful to the first sentence part of the challenge.

I chose Homer's Odyssey and I have interpreted drabble rather loosely.

The Fic

Yes, if only Odysseus, as he then was, could confront these Suitors, there’d be a quick death and a sorry wedding for them all.

Sorry Wedding

But now I will make a prophecy and this will come true.

Future tense

I beseech you, if ever my good father Odysseus in the hard years of war at Troy gave you his word and kept it, remember what he did and tell me all you know.

My father

A flick of the whip to speed them on, and the pair flew off with a will.

Chariot for Two

There is an island called Pharos in the rolling seas off the mouth of the Nile, a day’s sailing for a ship with a roaring wind astern.

Pharos

In this way Eurycleia hushed Penelope’s sobs and cleared her eyes of tears.

Saltwater offering

So for seventeen days he sailed on his course, and on the eighteenth there came into view the shadowy mountains of the Phaecians’ country, which jutted out to meet him.

Seventeen Days

In the end, his address was both courteous and full of subtlety.

Diplomacy

We will then take up the matter of his passage so as to ensure him without trouble or anxiety the happiness of a speedy return to his country under our escort, however far away it is.

In fact that was why the great Eurytus came to a sudden end and never lived to see old age in his home, but was killed by Apollo, whom he had offended by challenging him to a match.
