/peeks in

I saw this post and I had to say yay. I took some American Tribal Style bellydance classes last summer and, oh, so much fun. You're making me want to get back into it.

Good luck and have fun! :D I always thought hardcore practicing was really fun (but I'm a bit weird sometimes).

What was American Tribal Style like, if you can describe it?

I... really want to practice, but I feel so embarrassed when I try at home, ahah. My third lesson is today, and I haven't practiced at all at home. I'll look like such a flop in front of our instructor. Yay. orz

I think the word most people associate with it is "serpentine," and it really fits--not that all bellydance doesn't look sort of "serpentine," of course. It's unusually twisty, and flowing, and, mmm, "boneless," if that makes sense. And there are a lot of pretty serious isolations in it, so it takes a lot of practice and strength to do it really well (I've got a long way to go). And the big thing, at least in the original philosophy of it, as Fat Chance Bellydance set it down 30 or so years ago, is that it's all improvisational with one dancer leading and the other(s) following. Which is kind of intimidating the first time you lead! But I guess the best way to describe it is to say it's unusually serpentine and heavy on the isolations of different muscles or movements.

Oh, I know that feeling. It can be sort of awkward to practice all by your self and...alone...with the iPod on--but, good luck! I doubt you'll be a flop!
