Ok, so just a quick rant.  Promise I'll do my NYC post soon!!

RANT 1: BUFFY

So in seasons 1 and 2 Buffy had pretty big breasts, I admit (trust me, I'm going somewhere with this).  I mean they were lovely.  But due to her doing her own stunts, or just working out a lot, by season 4 she has at least and A cup, if not AA.  Cool.  This is the result of ( Read more... )

Joss talks about this somewhere in the TPB for Fray. (I think it was, anyway, it might've been somewhere else.) He was very happy to have an artist that was willing to not draw ginormous boobs on every female character.

If you're interested angearia, who is awesome in general, has a bunch cool posts on the portrayal of women in the comics. She talked about little else for a month or so. I particularly liked her study of nudity in Season 8 and the continued analysis.

And, if I may quote her because I think she's utterly brilliant:

On Nudity in the Comics: Men are never incidentally naked just 'cause. Women are (cleavage shown all over, abdomens shown in short shirts when those have long gone out of fashion and it'd make more sense for a MAN to flash his abs--my brother and cousins have walked around with their shirts off all the time in a fairly equal nonchalance to how woman show cleavage). Men in the comics are naked to show the Twilight symbol or to have sex or because they've just changed from a werewolf. Women flash nudity because they're in the background or to show inexplicable bonding that doesn't happen in real life. Women's nudity is shown because they merely EXIST as women.

Nice analysis. Also, the outfits woman are drawn in, especially in superhero comics, are bordering on pornstar clothes. They leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. I hate this, especially as their bodies are not at all representative of a real woman.

It's not a big deal, but it's just another way that boys are brought up these days not to appreciate women, not to understand what a female body really looks like, etcetc.

There's no reason to draw women in comics like this, except to suck boys and young men in. But should the story and the comic sell itself? Why do the artists feel they have to prostitute the women just to achieve their target audience.

Not all artists in the Buffyverse draw her like this, though, which is something at least.
