Yeah, I was completely unaware of the real story behind Lilith until one of my friends told me, and now I'm like... DUDE. Not only does it basically suck that she was so demonized for wanting to be equal with Adam, but the character on SPN is just some generic little-girl possessing demon? Like, what.
(I'm not at all caught up on season 6 -- I stopped watching it because it was boring as hell -- so I can't really comment on the part of this entry that's about Eve. But the meta-commentary in Supernatural really is disturbing, especially the degradation of non-Judeo-Christian faiths and the gender commentary. I actually just finished writing a paper about the demonization of femininity and the punishment for not adhering to hegemonic masculinity within the series.)
THANK YOU WTF. She's been my favourite for a long time now and I got all excited and then... nothing! Obviously they couldn't handle the epic hbic bamf she is.
(I'm not watching it at all. After they destroyed Anna I decided I would only watch until the end of S5. I just can't stand it for all the reasons you just said. It's so horrible to watch the things I love get so screwed in the show. Especially the paganism thing - that episode with all the gods infuriated me.)
Well, if that would comfort you - I don't like the SPN's image of God and good(?) angels. Somehow noone complains about it, I wonder if people really think God don't give a crap about people and Earth?? And angels - what the hell?? They are worse than demons!!! That's so twisted image!
So I guess every side can be pissed of how these supernatural creatures are presented in the show. But it's JUST the show. It's someone's subjective point of view on that matters. Thanks to these disagreements I bought myself 2 books about fallen angels and the good ones and I'm trying to find "my own" vision of hell and heaven.
I think whatever the writers would do to please one side, the other would feel discriminated or simply wont agree with author's vision *shrugs*
That's a valid point. But I think it would be easy to strike a balance to please everyone. They could easily have used Lilith better in the show and the narrative wouldn't have suffered. And there was no reason for them to make all pagan gods human eaters (when only a few are).
As to it being someone's point of view... yes, but they're also catering to an audience. Their POV is GOING to be criticised and analysed. I'm personally pissed off because Lilith doesn't get any attention. They are portraying mythical figures, bringing them into the modern audience's knowledge, and as such they have a responsibility to portray the figures as accurately as possible.
As a storyteller, it's just bloody lazy of them to just use Lilith's name and not any of her rich myths (that would have benefited the show).
Yeah, Lilith potential was waisted. I was also a little disappointed by the end of season 5 - Lucifer & Michael battle, should be more spectacular but was just short stupid fight. I must agree with you - many good legends and stories were waisted and now they're using some stupid bugs to fill the empty place after demons :/
I did a massive rant post about it. I was so offended. I love pagan mythology and they just attacked it. Hermes eats people? WTF! It was that, along with the treatment of female characters, that completely turned me of the show.
Yep. I mean, fair enough, their own interpretation of ancient religions. Personally, it pisses me off no end, but y'know, whatever. But using Hinduism like that?! I was appalled.
I'm a secular humanist, but I adore British paganism and witchcraft. It's part of my heritage and a part of who I am. Luckily there were no British gods there (I would have stormed the studios if there were), but I was still pissed off.
Yeah, I was miffed about that as well. Such a waste of a good character, especially since the Lilith they had was so weak and powerless. Ironically enough, on the DVD special they had a whole installment about Lilith and her role in Jewish mythology and all the while I kept thinking how even in the Vampirella comics Lilith was the mother of the vampires.
Wow. That's so odd that they knew her Jewish legends and didn't use them at all. I just can't understand that.
When I was reading about Eve's powers I was like but this is Lilith! She created a whole bunch of monsters! Eve just sort of moped around with Adam! Sighs.
I guess the problem was that Kripke created season 1-5, then he was done. So now for 6 they had to come up with new ideas but a whole bunch of names were already taken. I would have preferred it if they left her name as "mother" now as they did at first. Then suddenly it wss "call me Eve". But hey, second best choice. And she's already ganked by now, so so much for that.

I know! Make her into some little victim? How dare they?!

Is it a tiny step up from putting her in the meat grinder, or just as bad? I'm not sure.
